In 1862, the city annexed neighboring towns of Beloit and Green Bay to become one large settlement with a population of over 20,000 people. The original downtown district included four blocks of First Street between Washington and Harrison avenues, three blocks of Second Street between Market and State Streets, and two blocks of Third Street between Michigan Avenue and Main Street. In 1897, Fitchburg became part of the new Wisconsin Rapids metropolitan area which also encompassed Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine, Kenosha, Oshkosh and Menomonee Falls. In 2003–2004 the metropolitan area lost its jurisdictional status when it merged with Milwaukee to form the current Milwaukee-Wisconsin City government

However, this period of prosperity was eventually replaced by a period of decline during the 1930s due to both global economic recession and World War II. After the war, Fitchburg began to recovery slowly but surely, reaching its current level of development in the 1970s. The town has seen significant growth over the years, with today's population totaling over 10,000 people.
