The first European to visit Fitchburg was Jean Nicolet in 1785 while on his way to Lake Superior. He named it "Fitzburgh". The first post office was established in 1837. The town name may be derived from John Fitch's donation of land for a courthouse and jail in 1847. In 1907, it became a city and has since grown rapidly with its own city hall, banks, industries (including cheese production) and other businesses. Fitchburg has played an important role in the history of both Grant County and Milwaukee County; as early as 1847, when John Fitch donated land for a courthouse and jail here, he foresaw that this would become an important center for county government activity. In fact, by 1907 Fitchburg had already become one of the most significant settlements in Grant County – with more than 12 businesses operating on Main Street alone! In recent years however, residents have begun to voice their displeasure over some of the trends seen within their community:Specifically,-the high cost associated with living here;-the lack of affordable housing;-poor access to education and medical care;-a decrease in tourism due to increasingly expensive costs (particularly regarding airfare);-and overall economic stagnation or decline – all factors which have contributed to sharp declines in property values across the entire area over time!

Fitchburg was founded by John Fitch in 1824. It has been a small town since then and has population of only around 5,000. The town is located on the southern end of the Green Bay-Waukesha County line and is named after General James K. Polk who served as president from 1844 to 1849. The first settlers arrived in Fitchburg in 1824 and started a small farmstead. By 1830, some of the original families had moved to what is now Waukesha County and started another small farmstead there. In 1834, John Fitch founded the first bank in Wisconsin and used his profits to buy land for the town. The banks continued to be active until 1907 when they closed their doors because of the Panic of 1907. In 1850, Fitchburg became an official city thanks to vote by its citizens and incorporation byWisconsin Governor Abraham Lincoln under law No. 4984 (issued September 15th, 1850). At that time it had a population of only 1,500 people but it soon grew larger with new businesses starting up such as a flour mill, bakery, grocery store, post office and several churches. After becoming an official city, residents voted to rename it “Fitchburg” after General James K Polk who had served as President during the early years of this century (1844-1849). In 1895-96Fitchburg voters passed a resolution asking that Milwaukee be renamed “Fitchburg” after General James K Polk due to their similarities; both cities were located on Lake Michigan near river mouth which also made them close neighbors (although Milwaukee was much larger at that time). Today “Fitzburgh” remains one of twoofficial names for Fitchburg while Milwaukee retains its original name form prior to 1895 when it became part of Chicago
