In 1840, General George Washington Dodge founded the Dodge Oil and Refining Company here with partners Isaac Newton Wohlgemuth and John Padden Fischer. The company built a refinery on the present site of Harrods department store building in 1845-46. The town incorporated as a municipality in 1852. According to the 2000 census, there were 5,792 people living in Fitchburg total; 4% foreign born residents; 8% black or African American residents; 84% white residents; 2% Native American residents

Fitchburg was platted in 1854 and named for Gideon Fitch, an American statesman who served as U.S. Minister to Russia from 1853 to 1855 and as U.S. Secretary of State from 1861 to 1865. The first post office opened in Fitchburg on October 15, 1857, and the town was incorporated on December 3, 1860. Fitchburg's history can be traced back to its founding by Gideon Fitch in 1854 as one of the towns platted within Iron County following the opening of that county's first roads. At that time there were only a few settlements in Iron County and those located adjacent to larger towns such as Racine or Green Bay were supported primarily by agriculture rather than industry or commerce; this trend continued into the early 20th century with only a trickle of new businesses entering the community during that time period In 1886 when iron ore production began to grow rapidly near Wausau (then known as West Donahue), many residents decided it was too close home for their liking and left Fitchburg for good; however, some returned over time including John Pritchard who purchased land along what is now North Main Street in 1895 The arrival of automobiles effectively ended any semblance of rural isolation which had persisted since the late 19th century; instead more people started commuting into Milwaukee each day thanks to improved transportation options available at that time This change not only made life much easier for those living within walking distance of downtown but also created opportunities for businesses outside of town whose customers could easily access Interstate 94 or other commercial corridors
