The Town of Fitchburg was organized in 1837, and the first post office was established in 1841. In 1954–1955, Fitchburg hosted the World Championships in Rifle Shooting at Elmira Arsenal; that year also saw the introduction of what is now known as sporting chronographs as part of a program sponsored by Browning for military marksmen. From 1966 through 1971, Fitchburg housed what is now known as the Wisconsin State Pistol Championship at Elmira Arsenal; that event served as a qualifier for USPTO International Match events which took place annually from then until 1993.
Fitchburg is a small town in Brown County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 805 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Metropolitan Area. Fitchburg is located on the southern edge of the Black Hills National Forest and had an estimated manufacturing employment of 138 in 2000. The community was named for Jacob Hixon Fitch (1811-1876), who served as justice of the peace and mayor from 1853 to 1857 and again from 1865 to 1867. He donated land for a village site in what is now Fitchburg. The first settler arrived in 1855, but it wasn't until 1861 that a post office was established here. In 1865, Wm Grafton founded the town Hall Block Company which manufactured cheese products such as gouda and cheddar cheese. The company became known as Grafton Cheese Company after its founder's death in 1888. A school was built here in 1903 by Jno Hixon and his father-in-law, Ira Waldenberger; it became Wiscasset Memorial High School when it merged with Racine Memorial High School in 2006. After World War II ended, many factories closed down or went out of business due to economic recession throughout much of North America; however, some businesses did continue operations through the 1990s into new product generations including American Weighing Machine Co., which still operates an offshoring operation today out of Fitchburg Township outside Milwaukee In 2000, according to US Census Bureau data, there were only 714 people living within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown Fitchburg proper while another 931 people lived within 10 miles (16 km) or so around both urban areas including Milwaukee and Waukesha townships added since then have swollen populations reaching over 1 million residents by 2030 if current trends continue unchanged: this means that not only has downtown been shrinking but also suburbs have emerged on its outskirts drawing workers away from downtown cores like Fitchburg

By 1900, over 100 businesses were operating in Fitchburg. In 1916, a large fire destroyed most of the downtown area and left many buildings without roofs or windows. After years of reconstruction, much of downtown is now open for business again. In 1944, during World War II, Fitchburg became one of several small towns along the American East Coast that came under bombardment from Japanese forces during the war. During this time, many businesses and homes were damage or destroyed. However, after the war ended and most of these towns regained their previous levels of development, Fitchburg remained an important commercial center for much of its history
