In 1854, Fitchburg was founded by John A. Fitch and his family. The town at that time had a population of only seventy-six people, but it soon became the center of industry in the area. In 1876, the Wisconsin Arsenal was built in nearby Green Bay, and Ammunition Manufacturing Company began production there. Ammunition production continued until World War II, when it switched to large-scale manufacturing of explosives and other munitions. The Village of Fitchburg is also located in Dodge County. Fitchburg was founded in 1847 by General James Wilkinson and his family. The town was named after George Washington's home state of Virginia. In 1868, Fitchburg became the seat of Dodge County when it was split from Waukesha County. The original courthouse building still stands as a museum, used for court proceedings and other events until it burned down in 1969. The first post office in Fitchburg opened on July 1, 1851. The name change to Fitchburg on December 21, 1865 due to objections from neighboring towns that were given post office names beginning with "F." In 1916, the Works Progress Administration constructed an agricultural research station in what is now the village of Fitchburg. This site remains one of the most important research facilities for maize production in North America today and has been used for breeding corn varieties since before World War II. In 1941-1942 during World War II, many American soldiers were stationed here while they underwent training at Camp Randall near Madison; local residents helped provide food and shelter for these troops while they trained or served out their time overseas. In 1990-1991 as part of changes brought about by new management at Wisconsin State University (now UW-Milwaukee), then known as UW-Wisconsin System, much property within walking distance of campus had to be taken over because it had been purchased by university trustees who wanted more space available for students and facultycium buildings on campus (including administration buildings). Most notably this included land along Kinnaird Drive which housed many Biola students prior to its purchase by WSU trustees; upon purchase Biola undergraduates took possession of their old dormitories whichsat vacant until 1994 when they demolished them completely and replaced them with brand newstudent housing which are still under construction today! Fitchburg is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 2,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area and is located on the east side of the Milwaukee River. Fitchburg was founded in 1836 by Levi Loomis and others as a small station on the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St Paul Railroad. The town became a city in 1919 when it joinedMilwaukee County. Fitchburg has been named an American City twice: first in 1888 and again in 1932 as part of nationwide expanding American cities movement known as "The Great Lakes Cities Program." In 1830, Jens Sorensen came to America from Denmark with his family and started what would become one of Fitchburg's most lasting businesses – operating a sawmill outside of town for over fifty years until it closed in 1906. In 1835, John Hennepin built a ferry across the Milwaukee River for transportation between Fitchburg and points north. A post office called Fitchburg was established in 1839, but no mail arrived until 1840 due to bad weather starting early that year; service continued intermittently until 1847 when regular mail service began transporting passengers and goods between towns on two daily trips across the river (the first such services were made possible by entrepreneur George Stephenson’s construction of his new CPR Line). During this time there were also several other small communities located along or near where today's Wauwatosa Avenue meets Interstate 94: Eau Claire (1846), Menomonee Falls (1854), Racine (1856), Brookfield (1861), Janesville (1863) Kewaunee (1864) Uniontown (1865), Allouez Falls Dam(present-day Superior National Forest Headquarters)and Appleton(1911). "The Townshend Guide to Wisconsin" says that “many people think that [Fitchburg] may have been founded by Levi Loomis himself because he had some land adjacent to where he eventually constructed his house which still stands today” There are several sources which suggest this theory including oral history from local residents who claim they remember seeing Loomis waving a white board with writing stating “here I am – start your own town!” soon after arriving home from traveling through Illinois looking for land for his new community; village founders diary entries dated July 1st 1840 which list him as one of their initial directors; letters Patent No 7-3-040 issued February 25th 1840 granting privileges to Village of Fitchburg Incorporated – all these evidence lead many historians to believe that Fichburgh indeed originated from Levi Loomis himself."
