Fitchburg is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the Northwestern part of the state on the Fox River. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fauquier County. The first permanent settler in what would become Fitchburg was Noah Webster who arrived in 1843 and built a cabin near present day downtown.Webster's cabin served as a stopping point for stagecoaches moving between Milwaukee and Chicago until 1852 when he sold his property to George Condon and others for $3,000. In 1856, John Stephenson purchased Websters land from Condon and started building a log courthouse which became known as "The Colored Court House". The first county meeting held in this building were on April 15,1856. In 1861, following Wisconsin's admission into the Union as a new country, Fitchburg became part of Virginia Territory under President Abraham Lincoln. On July 20th, 1861 an act was passed by Congress which designated Fitchburg as its capital city with Joseph Pfeffer appointed Mayor to administer its affairs pending further action by Congress. The city charter was ratified on August 10th of that year and Joe Pfeffer served until 1865 when he resigned due to health reasons In 1865-1866 Wm Henningsen served as Mayor while Drury Harper ran for Governor but lost to George Romney On October 1st 1886 James Ahern joined forces with Horace Greeley to form what would become called "The Great Chicago Fire" which destroyed most of upper Illinois including Chicago with only 8 buildings remaining standing within 4 blocks of where we now stand
Fitchburg was platted in 1838, and named after General John Fitch. The town was originally a small settlement on the east side of the Wisconsin River. In 1872, the town became a city, and in 1955 it became a rural community.
