Fitchburg was founded in 1836 by Peter Fitch and his wife Catharine. The town grew rapidly after it was platted in the 1840s, becoming one of Wisconsin's largest communities. In 1851, Fitchburg became the capital of the new Wisconsin Territory. It remained that way until 1863, when it merged with the neighboring city of Milwaukee to form the larger city of Milwaukee. In 1898, Fitchburg seceded from Milwaukee and became its own independent city. The population peaked at over 100,000 in 1920 but has since declined modestly. Today, Fitchburg is a small town with a few thousand residents. The history of Fitchburg begins with two pioneers who set foot on its shores more than 180 years ago: Peter Fitch and Catharine (Catherine) Barlowe. Both men were born in 1798 in Bristol Township, New Jersey and emigrated to what is now southeastern Wisconsin in 1836 as part of an early wave of settlers seeking new land to farm and build homes on. While Catharine may have arrived first, it is likely that Peter arrival marked the beginning of an enduring friendship between these two men – both had traveled extensively during their lives − that would last throughout their lifetimes together. In less than a decade after arriving in what is now southeasternWisconsin,PeterFITCHandCatharineBarlowehadcreateda strongCommunityof themselves within theirnewplaceofFinchburgh.(See map below). These contacts led them to develop relationships with other farmers outside their own borders that would prove invaluable during times OF political instability due to numerous factors such as Indian Wars , gold rushes etc...! Through these connections they formed lasting friendships which continue today
