Eau Claire, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 20,715 at the 2010 census. The town is located in the most northerly corner of Wisconsin and borders Michigan to the east, Iowa to the north, and Illinois to the south-west. Eau Claire was founded on July 1, 1847 by fur traders George A. Smith and James McKay as a port on the Fox River for trade with Canada and other Great Lakes regions. The post office opened in 1853 and closed in 1957; its last ZIP code was 84518. The first settler in Eau Claire was John Friesen who arrived on July 1, 1847 from Minnesota viaboat landing at Whitefish Bayou (now North Branch River). He built a cabin near what is now downtown Eau Claire on land that he had bought from Pierre Chouteau for $5 per acre (equivalent to $ today). By 1850, there were over twenty settlers living in or near Eau Claire including twelve families from Canada who had come downriver for trade with Native Americans According to HistoryLink: "In 1852–1853 some early pioneers of this small community began erecting homes around what is now downtown Eau Claire using logs brought downriver by barge during summertime." In December 1852 when Indiana Territory was created out of part of Michigan Territory following US President Millard Fillmore's orderWindsor Aspinwall donated 640 acres (25 km²) along present day East side Avenue between Milwaukee Road and Chicago & Northwestern Railroad tracks – just east of where Prairie du Chien lies today – to form "Eaux Claires Township". This gift helped lay the groundwork for future development within what would become known as “the township”." It should be noted that this initial donation did not include all or any portion of modern-day downtown Eau Claire which still stands today despite having been developed over 100 years ago! A survey taken after Indiana Territory's creation showed that over 60% of currentresidential properties were owned or leased by Canadian settlers! Today many people throughout much of central/western WI know about our history thanks to local television programs such as "Wisconsin History Now" produced by WISN-TV 10 Eyewitness News affiliate (see link below), website articles/websites like American Indian Wars: Prelude To Today's America blog post written by authorrea everett published 2007 on wisconsinhistorynow dot org/, interviews with descendant’s currently living hereinabouts as well as numerous books etc etc etc... Eau Claire is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the western Twin Cities metropolitan area and on the south shore of Lake Superior. The population was 20,811 at the 2010 census. Eau Claire is one of two towns in Wisconsin that are both located on Lake Superior and have their own separate governments (the other being Waukesha). The first inhabitants of what is now Eau Claire were Native Americans who migrated from Canada around 1783. The Town of EauClaire was organized in 1848 as a result of a vote by residents of nearby Menominee Falls. The city was founded by Captain Daniel Grosse and his assistants, Isaac Hecker and Cornelius Friesen, on November 15, 1854 as the terminus for the Great Northern Railroad's line to Duluth, Minnesota. It became part of Green Bay when that city was incorporated on May 14, 1907. In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson visited Eau Claire and dedicated an experimental hydroelectric power plant there which provided electricity to Green Bay for over fifty years until it closed in 1984 due to low prices caused by natural gas production nearby. In 1957, Eau Claire voters passed a resolution authorizing annexation by Milwaukee County because they felt that Milwaukee would not provide enough services to support their small town; this made Eau Clair one of only two communities in Wisconsin to be annexed into another county without being given any say in the matter (the other being Racine). On July 1st 1969 firefighters from Battle Creek responded to a blaze at an aluminum smelter near Battle Creek which had spread rapidly through forested areas neighboring the town limits; it reached 3 square miles within 24 hours after starting out at a pace deemed too fast for containment using existing equipment; this began what would become known as "Battle Creek Inferno". Eaux-Claires School District #2 opened its doors for students on September 5th 1953 after earlier serving students from Maple Leaf Elementary School which burned down on August 26th 1951 during Hurricane John’s tornado outbreak; enrollment had doubled since opening day thanks largely to female students who were admitted for lack thereof elsewhere in the school district

The first European to record sighting of the present-day town was Frenchman Jean Nicolet in 1795. It was platted as a Village on November 20, 1836 by commissioners John H. Prentice and Lewis Cass. Eau Claire became an incorporated town on February 2, 1854.
