It became an incorporated city on January 1, 1886. The name "Eau Claire" comes from French for "waterloo." The first settlers to this area were French-Canadian farmers and fur traders who began arriving in droves during the early 1800s. By 1854, there were over 100 European residents living in what is now Eau Claire. buildings that date back to that time include the original courthouse which still stands today and several churches including St. Lawrence Catholic Church which was built in 1886 and still serves as a Parish church today. In 1892, the Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad came through town and started providing service to Racine and Green Bay Junction respectively.
