In 1876, the business relocated to its current location on First Avenue just north of State Street. In 1907, Mrs. A.H. Swift opened her own business at 5th and State Streets in what is now known as the Old City Hall Building. She continued to sell optical equipment until she retired in 1966. This building served as a storage facility for Ms. Swift's business until it was destroyed by fire in 1984 (Griffin 1981). After World War II ended, Mr. Prentice closed his store but continued to make sales calls from his home phone until his death in 1978.(Wohl 1978) His son took over his father's business after his death and continue making sales calls into present day(Wohl 2016a). By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Eau Clara with shops, churches, schools, businesses and a newspaper serving the community. In 1872, Colonel John Fetterman purchased land east of present day Eaux Claires Boulevard near where Interstate 94 currently exits onto County Highway 441 (CH441), making it an incorporated town within its own county only two years later! Today’s downtown districts - known collectively as “Old Town” - were built during this time periodaround him on land he donated or leased from local farmers and businesses alike.
