At that time, guns were not commonly accessible to the public and were only available to those who had a license from the county sheriff. The store was visited by many people during its early years, including Major General John A. Fremont who purchased a gun from the store. The town of Eau Claire grew rapidly during the mid-19th century and several mills were built around town to exploit local resources. One of these mills, which belonged to James Fenton, produced cannons for use in warfare. In 1859, Fenton donated land within the town limits for a schoolhouse and cemetery. This donation set off a controversy as some residents wanted to build a school while others desired to create an open space for burial purposes. Ultimately, both schools were built and are still standing today. During World War II, Eau Claire became one of few communities in Wisconsin that volunteered their services in support of military efforts. Many citizens took up arms in order to protect their homes and loved ones from Nazi officials or Luftwaffe bombers flying overhead at night. The result was high casualty rates for both civilians and military units alike; however, Eau Claire managed to remain largely unscathed until 1945 when bombings destroyed most of downtown area including much of the mill complex where many citizens worked (see below). Eau Claire, Wisconsin (population: 45,000) is a city in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The city was founded in 1854 by General George Armstrong Custer and his officers as the new capital of the Minnesota Territory after Minneapolis was destroyed by fire. A post office was opened in Eau Claire on November 1, 1855. The first settlers were French Canadian refugees who had fled the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. They built log cabins near what is now downtown Eau Claire and started a small grocery store to sell goods from their horses and dogs that they brought overland from Canada. In 1857, whenMinnesota became a state, the City of Eau Claire was incorporated with a population of about fifty people. In 1865–66, local farmers formed an agricultural society to improve their lot and raised corn for export to Chicago; however this failed because demand for foodstuffs increased only modestly during the Civil War years while prices for manufactured goods went up steeply. A millinery shop owner named Anna Beavers donated her land at Third Street and Main Street NW to make way for a town hall which would be used as an overflow storage facility for local Grain Elevators before becoming known as Beavers Hall Park today. A post office was established at First St SW in 1865; it published its first issue on December 2 that year. The name "Eau Claire" has been used since December 25th 1862 when John Nevin changed it from "Hudson Bay" to "Eaux-Claires". A railway line called the Milwaukee Road reached Eau Claire through Waterloo Junction on April 12th 1865 making it possible to ship commodities such as flour and lumber here instead of having them transported all the way across Lake Michigan via steamboats or wagons which took weeks or even months! 2nd Lt Charles Wickersham (USN) died instantly after being hit by friendly fire while serving with Company K1/8TH US Infantry Regiment during World War I while helping consolidate supplies at Fort Snelling southwest of Minneapolis on September 24th 1918 - one day shy of his 21st birthday! He is buried at Ft Snelling National Cemetery
