The community was founded by fur traders as Eau Claire ( pronounced "yoo-kuh-lay") on April 28, 1836, after they crossed the Des Moines River into what is now Iowa during their annual Rendezvous Trail trip from Fort Snelling in Minnesota to trade goods with the Sioux people across the Missouri River. The name was derived from French éclaireur meaning "light bearer." Founded on May 25, 1837 by Capt. David Smith and John Merrill as Merrill's Ferry Landing on Beaver Creek near present day Wausau and named for General James Kieft's corps commanded by Smith at that time while camped along Duck creek near Oconomowoc in Crawford County; this landing had been established two days previous when Kieft's forces destroyed a party of Shawnees led by Chief Weahee at Aitkin Prairie about three miles east of modern Eau Claire on October 4th prior to his campaign against them begun October 3rd that week beginning with an attack upon Weahee's encampment near Green Bay; Kieft's forces numbered about 20 men under Captain Smith including 10 mounted warriors plus 150 or so paddlers supported by six canoes filled with food, ammunition and provisions for their journey downstream through Kickapoo Rapids past Sandusky rapids before arriving within two miles (3 km) of modern EauClaire on November 6th following which they burned all but one building hereinafter called “FortKieft’s Post” then took up permanent residence circa November 8th upon completion of fortifications hereon having started construction soon prior thereto using lumber brought overland from Red Wing via Sauk Rapids whereupon Lieutenant Colonel John Chisholm commanding Second Regiment Michigan Volunteers stationed thereat directed importation thereof thence procured among local settlers many good pieces of artillery ballast & heavy timbers having arrived herefrom Fort Snelling December 1st 1836 & January 2nd 1837 prior to Indian winter shutdown commenced January 5th1837; this post also served as trading center for Sauk/Washburne Country until early 1840s when Dakotan Indians moved into this territory taking over most village sites thus eliminating most opportunities for trade thro' land military control etc.; during late 1830s & 1840s small villages formed around river mouth along lower Des Moines River valley including present day EauClaire located approx 15 mi upstream excepting Wausau which became a separate town ceded to Dane County February 12th1846 thru actof Assembly passed July 9th 1846 unifying all earlier towns therein forming today’s City Of EauClaire comprising portions lying southwesterly side Of Assumption Lake shoreline extending northerly beyond limits set forth In Said Act viz: section 7 northward unto line joining said lake with Green Bay laying easterly thence due west to original site bounded westerly by Section 21 northerly & southerlyBoundaries set forth In Said Act were not exceeded But certain additional square footage designated lot number 3 within said new city Limits being apportioned thereby To said Town Clerk who has exercised all proper authority For such purposes As aforesaid

Eau Claire is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Eau Claire County. The population was 54,747 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Eau Claire County and second-largest city in Wisconsin after Milwaukee. The first people to live in what is now Eau Claire were French Canadians who arrived there during the 17th century as part of the Great Lakes Colony. In 1838, when Indiana Territory was created, EauClaire became its capital and served as such until being moved to Milwaukee in 1846. The city was named for John Fonda, an American Merchant Marine captain who had settled near the mouths of the riversina (now known as Black River) and donated land for a town site on which he built a cabin in 1837. The town site was renamed "EAU CLAIRE" on May 10, 1839 by Act of Congress following his death that year while serving as a member of the United States Senate from New York State. In 1865, when Wisconsin became a state, EauClaire became its capital again and served until it merged with Racine into that state's larger city government on January 1, 1967. A local ordinance repealed racial segregation within restaurants and other public places effective July 6, 1964; this ordinance led to increased business activity among black residents located outside of downtown who increasingly patronized businesses inside City Hall/Downtown area due to lack of other options during that time period..
