The name of the town comes from the outlet of Eau Claire River on Lake Michigan where it joins the Fox River. The first Europeans to visit what is now Eau Claire were French traders and fur traders in 1793. During the American Revolutionary War, General George Washington's army passed through the area on their march northward from Montreal to Detroit. They stopped at what is now Eau Claire and left behind some supplies and munitions that helped help win that battle. In 1812 Europe's largest salt mine was opened here by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his partners under contract with Ulysses S. Grant for $1 million dollars (equivalent to $103 million in 2016). This led to a large influx of immigrants during the early years of this century - Germans (mostly), Irish (mainly), Poles, Italian immigrants, Scandinavian settlers and Mexican nationals all came to work in these mines and towns around Dodge City nearby. During World War II local farmers grew crops such as corn, wheat and beans; FDR ordered production halted because of rationing; post-war growth included housing developments such as Hennepin County's West Side Village However much later when production resumed there was an increase in traffic due to manufacture of automobiles including Studebaker cars which began manufacturing here in 1927 followed by Harley-Davidson motorcycles beginning operation in 1928; other manufactures located here include WPTZ Radio Corporation (1927), Alcoa aluminum products plants (1929) [now part of Alliant Energy], Krupp AG Metallurgy plant (1939), Stearns Chemical Company Paper Products Division Headquarters Building/Warehouse/Pump House built 1935 [now known as Smiths Warehouse]; McCormick & Co meatpacking plants started operations at Rockford Arsenal Ammunition Plant 1942 [now owned by Barrett Firearms] whileGeneral Electric purchased Knoeller Aircraft Components corporation 1947; Ford Motor Company acquired Mitchell Aircraft Corporation 1951 which produced jets for USAF active duty use starting 1954[the last jet engine manufactured at Knoeller] while Raytheon Missile Systems Corporation began making nuclear weapons in 1959producing Thor Missiles 1968 until they closed down 1983 leaving only daycare facilities operate today along with a small amount of agricultural production still taking place although most goods are shipped overseas
