De Pere is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River near Green Bay. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis–Eau Claire Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in what is now De Pere was French Jesuit missionary Jacques Marquette in 1679. He named it after Pieter de Pere, a Dutch fur trader who had explored and charted the river valley in 1668-70. The first permanent settler in De Pere was Nicholas Justus Dutton, who arrived about 1824 and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1840, Abram Fenton bought land from Dutton and set out to claim it as his own farmstead. He named it Fenton Prairie after his friend and mentor Abram Fenwick (1793-1862). Fenton's daughter Clara married John Hargrave (1812-1878), an American lawyer and blogger who became one of the pioneering settlers in De Pere. They moved their family to their farmstead around 1846 when Hargrave took up law practice there with Jabez Wiggs (1802-1872). A succession of families added to Fenton Prairie over time: The Hardakis (1905-1984), Laddsons (1910-2001), McKennans (1914-2006), etc., until finally by 1980 all but one of the original homesteaders had died or ceased operations. From its earliest days, De Pere attracted people drawn not just by its natural resources but also by its unique history and culture which included large numbers of Native Americans who lived among them for centuries before becoming Indianized through contact with European traders, missionaries, colonists and soldiers during both World War I and II; as well as many local artists whose work has been preserved for public view at County Museum locations throughout central Wisconsin including downtown De Pere; most notably David Stone Martin’s “Wisconsin Life” mural which can be seen inside Main Street Hall across from the Bancroft Library since 1978; as well as other attractions such as community theater productions staged at First Lutheran Church on State Street featuring local talent each season; hunting/fishing opportunities available both upstream from town limits within Town Lake Erie National Wildlife Refuge boundary - 12 miles east shoreline along Clearwater River - while still maintaining much rural character providing access only via trails that wind through deeply wooded areas northeast of town limits giving hunters opportunities to see game they otherwise would not have had access too; significant agricultural production taking place starting with raising hogs next door on Justus Dutton land where pork products were often cured then transported downriver for market before arriving here early this century beginning with laying down some sod crops beside Town Creek forming today's city Limits Neighborhood grid development started around 1830 when several families began settling primarily Hereford cattle farmers laid out stages long blocks parallel streets facing southwestview Road later becoming known simply Streets blocks are Longitude Location map indicating approximate location
