De Pere is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,824 at the 2010 census and it is the third most populous town in Dodge County after Superior and La Crosse. It is part of the Green Bay–Milwaukee metropolitan area. The name De Pere comes from French meaning "the place where they burned crops." The first settler in De Pere was Nicholas de Peralta, who settled in 1792. By 1836 there were over 100 residents in De Pere. In 1847, Isaac Sargent built a sawmill on the river near present-day downtown De Pere; this mill became one of America's leading lumber businesses until it closed in 1957. In 1851, John Cushman founded an insurance company which became known as Citizens' National Life Insurance Company (CNL). CNL was merged into United mutual life Insurance Company (UMIC) in 1951. UMIC merged with American National Corporation (ANCO) to form Allstate Corporation in 1986, but Allstate went bankrupt two years later and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. In 1927, David Wesson purchased what would become Wesson's Brewery which he operated until his death in 2006. In 1961, Rolland Hirsch established a grocery store on Main Street called The Jewelry Shoppe which continued to operate until 2003 when it closed down due to economic problems with the local food industry combined with high costs associated with bringing new products online using ecommerce systems at that time

De Pere is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 8,865 at the 2010 census, making it the tenth-largest municipality in Wisconsin. It is located on the Brown County side of Fox Lake, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Milwaukee and 25 miles (40 km) south of Green Bay. The first Europeans to visit De Pere were French fur trappers in 1673–1674; they named it La Prairie because of its agricultural potential. In 1837, John Crampton founded a sawmill here as part of his Chicago-based company that built mills all over America. The town's first store opened in 1850, and by 1860 there were 10 stores and 100 residents. In 1871, De Pere became the county seat for Brown County after being chosen over Oshkosh by a vote of its citizens; Oshkosh had been designated as the county seat for Wood County since 1852. In 1880, George Stephenson erected an electric power plant here that supplied electricity to nearby towns until 1910 when he constructed a larger plant at Waukesha which continues to supply power today. In 1907, De Pere built its current courthouse and jail with funds provided by local farmers who subscribed to Stephenson's experimental hydroelectric power project; construction began in 1908 and completed two years later! The cornerstone for this building was laid on July 4, 1909 by Governor Francis Parker Heitkamp during what was then known as "Wisconsin's Electric Week." During World War II De Pere served as one of three major military training sites for troops from across America; more than 11 thousand men underwent training here between 1942 and 1945 including many officers who went on to command American forces during Vietnam War era operations. After the war ended there was much development here including the founding of the University of Wisconsin–De Pere in 1951 which remains one of America’s leading universities today!
De Pere was founded in 1836 by Daniel De Pere, a French-Canadian fur trader. The town grew quickly and soon became a major transportation center for the area. In 1847, De Pere was incorporated as a city. The city experienced significant growth during the late 19th century, thanks to its role as a transportation hub and its location on the Chicago, Milwaukee, and Eastern Railroad. By 1900, De Pere had become one of Wisconsin's largest cities.
