De Pere is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Fox River. The population was 2,475 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area and is bordered by Racine to the east and Waukesha to the north. The name De Pere likely came from a French word meaning "settlement" or "farmstead." The first settler in what is now De Pere was Pierre LeMaire, who arrived in 1793 and claimed land near present-day Racine. He built a cabin on top of a hill in what is now downtown De Pere, which he named La Prairie (later known as La Crosse). In 1836, Moses Asbury settled here with his family after arriving from Vermont. Asbury operated a sawmill and gristmill that produced lumber for local homes until 1854 when he started an agricultural store that became one of Green Bay's most successful businesses. In 1855, Abraham Lincoln visited De Pere while campaigning for president; he called it "a very small halt on this great national stage". After being elected president, Lincoln ordered Congress to pass an act creating the United States Territorial Land Office in Dakota Territory so that farmers there could sell their land more easily to settlers. This act led to increased settlement of Dakota Territory by Americans and helped spur growth in De Pere throughout the late 19th century and into the 20th century. During World War II, many civilians were brought over from Germany as slave labor for munitions production at Decatur Peninsular Ammunition Plant (DAP) northeast of town; some people still living here speak German due to lack of another language option during wartime times. Many black citizens also worked at DAP during this time period; however they were not counted among residents because they were considered non-white citizens according to Wisconsin law which prohibited involuntary servitude within its borders without explicit consent from those owning property within its boundaries. In 1957–1958, construction began on what would become Kohl's Department Store—the first major development in town since white settlement began 50 years earlier! The store quickly became one of De Pere's most popular attractions with its wide variety of merchandise including clothing, food items, appliances, toys and other items unique to Wisconsinites back then such as gas pumps that dispensed gasoline by weight rather than pumpkins! Kohl's remained open until it closed its doors in 1978 following federal regulations against supermarkets having pharmacies inside them; however souvenir sales continue today at nearby GASP convenience stores!
