De Pere, Wisconsin, is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is the third-most populous city in the Milwaukee metropolitan area and home to the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee (UWM). The city is also home to several shopping malls, including Wauwatosa Mall and Menomonee Falls Mall. De Pere has been inhabited by indigenous people for over two thousand years. The first Europeans to visit De Pere were French traders in 1663 who named it "Pere." The town was founded by fur traders on May 12, 1836 as a trading post on the Grand River between Green Bay and Milwaukee. In 1853, De Pere became part of Racine County when Racine was divided into counties. The onset of World War II led to an increase in military activity in De Pere; however, no Damage control Center or other critical infrastructure damage occurred until after 1945 due to wartime restrictions placed on civilian construction by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal Administration. After war ended in 1945, many residents returned home and businesses reopened; however, most development did not take place until after 1960 when Interstate 94 was built through central De Pere and surrounding rural areas connecting Milwaukee with Chicago and beyond while bypassing downtown De Pere entirely. In 1978, conducted an internal study that recommended annexation of neighboring towns of White Earth which had long complained about lack of services within their boundaries despite being adjacent to larger communities such as Racine and Appleton; this recommendation resulted in WhiteEarth's incorporation into De Pere three years later forming one municipality with a total population of over 1 million people today as well as more than 350 businesses located throughout its borders including both inside and outside De Pierville Township limits!
