De Pere, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 8,859 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Menomonee River east of Milwaukee and north of Chicago. The name De Pere means "place where apples are grown." De Pere was founded by Danish immigrants in 1836 as a farming community on the Menomonee River. In 1854, it was incorporated as a city and named for Pierre de Pere, an early French settler in that area. The city grew rapidly during thelate 19th century due to its access to transportation routes and its location near major markets. De Pere reached its peak growth around World War I; although it declined following the war, it regained some of its former stature during the postwar period as an important manufacturing center for automobiles and other small businesses. By 2000, however, De Pere's economic decline had begun to set in; its population had decreased by about 10% since 1990 and its GDP had fallen by about one-third since 2002). In 2007, Mayor Rick D'Alema announced his intention to make De Pere anachronic municipality – which would have allowed it to retain most of its current government functions but reduce overall civic growth) The town has experienced several waves of settlement over time: first from Germans during the late 19th century; then from Irish immigrants in the 1870s; and finally from Poles beginning in the 1930s. De Pere is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located about 20 miles south of Milwaukee and about 25 miles north of Green Bay. The population was 7,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waukegan, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to settle in De Pere were French-Canadian traders and missionaries who founded a mission there in 1835. The original town was named after Pierre de Pere, one of their number. The name has been changed several times since then (most recently De Pere Village). The first post office was established in 1837 and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1906. One early resident, George Fenton, served as postmaster for many years before he died suddenly in 1865 while serving as mayor of De Pere. One significant event that took place during the early days of De Pere was the incorporation of the village on December 12, 1854 by ordinance from a group including prominent citizens John Hickey, Levi Coffin and Amos Griggs. Incorporation marked an important milestone for De Pere as it became fully organized as a separate community with its own Board of Trustees and government officials responsible for its well-being. The first store opened in what is now downtown De Pere on Pine Street within what is now City Hall Park which stood at that location until 1959 when it moved across Elm Street to its current site near Main Street/Uptown shopping district today known as "Old Town". Downtown buildings such as City Hall (now known as Old Town Plaza) – built c1868 – State Capitol Annex (now home to the Historical Museum), First National Bank Building (now Home Depot) were all erected during this time period when De Pere had become an important commercial center within its own rightful borders! In 1955 two local businessmen purchased land adjoining City Hall Park which they used to build an entirely new structure – Municipal Building #1 – now known simply as Municipal Buildings after having served both functions simultaneously from 1955-1959! This building still stands today and provides administrative offices for both city government and municipal services currently administered by both entities! This establishment represented a major step forward for growth and success for De Pere over those early years; indeed some would say even started things downhill subsequently with less than perfect business practices being eventually brought to light thereby causing much consternation among some key decision-makers!!! ...a popular saying around these parts goes "A picture is worth 2 words" ....and that's exactly how things got started back then folks…………………..
