It is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area and is located on the Fox River near Green Bay. The name of De Pere comes from German settlers who named it "Pere". The first settler in De Pere was Jacob Engelsbach in 1837. In 1847, George Pohl moved to De Pere and started a flour mill that became one of the largest flour mills in America. In 1907, John DeLorean founded DeLorean Motor Co., which still operates out of their original factory on North Main Street in De Pere today. Another early community resident was Moses Houghton who settled around 1860 along with his family and several others near present day Wauwatosa. The name De Pere is derived from the Ojibwe word "pēr" meaning "land" and "īt" meaning "place". The first settler in what is now De Pere was John Palfrey in 1836. In 1854, David Horton purchased land east of present-day De Pere from French Canadian Pierre François Leduc. He named his new settlement Hortonville after David Horton's father-in-law, also named Peter Francis Leduc. Other early settlers included James Waring and Samuel Morse. The first store in De Pere was opened by George Haggerty on November 5, 1857. Post office operations were started on December 3, 1859; the cornerstone for the current post office building was laid on January 11, 1860. The city of De Pere began to form when a group of farmers formed a local cooperative to sell goods they produced themselves rather than purchasing items from outside dealers. This type of organization later became known as a village or incorporated town because it allowed more control over their own affairs by its residents. On October 20, 1860, voters approved incorporation of the town with a vote of 36 to 0%. On December 3rd 1865 Mayor JF Booth officiated at the dedication of First Presbyterian Church which served as community center until 1966 when it moved into what is now Lakefront Park downtown
