In the early 1800s, De Pere was a small town located in western Wisconsin. It was founded by Norwegian settlers in 1851 and quickly became a prosperous farming community. The townspeople developed their own local firearms industry, manufacturing rifles, shotguns and pistols. Gun lights were one of the first products produced in De Pere. They were originally designed to be used as signal lights on boats or other vessels and were later used to indicate gunfire during military engagements. Gunlights continued to be produced until the mid-19th century, when they began to fall out of favor due to their limited use and expensive price tags. However, they remain an important part of firearms history and are still being used today by some enthusiasts throughout the world.

The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th most populous city in the state and its second-largest municipality by population size after Milwaukee. It is located on Lake Michigan north of Green Bay. The town was founded by Swedish immigrants in 1837 as a farming community known as Brunnen (the brine spring). In 1847, De Pere became part of the United States and changed its name to Wisconsin Rapids. The first post office opened in De Pere on November 16, 1847. In 1870, a railroad depot was built here and named for John Fitch de Pere, an early settler and one of the incorporators of Racine County. In 1907, during Prohibition era alcohol prohibition was repealed in Wisconsin following ratification of The New York State Constitution amendment banning liquor sales statewide; this made De Pere one of just two municipalities in the old Badger State that did not ratify Prohibition (the other being Waukesha). In 1933, when Wisconsin became a protectorate of then-Uruguay from Nazi Germany throughOperation Paperclip,[2] many Germans settled in De Pere due to high demand for work opportunities after World War II ended.[3] Many businesses which had been closed down or moved away during prohibition remain open today such as Diamonds R Us[4], Beechwood Cafe,[5], Blue Ribbon Cigars,[6], Kwik Trip Grocery,[7] Stonington Brewing Company[8] and even Old Dutch Bros., which still sells beer out door since 1919! The current mayor is Josh Borenstein who took office on January 1st 2017

In addition to its agricultural roots, De Pere has also played an important role in local politics over the years - including serving as both a state and federal district court seat and as a member of both houses of the Wisconsin State Legislature. The history of De Pere goes back to 1854, whenJacob and his family arrived in what is now De Pere from Racine, WI. They started a mill on the banks of Koshkonkonis River which they named "DePere". The first store opened there in 1856. By 1860, there were two stores and 12 homes here. The community grew quickly because it was convenient to railroads; by 1870, freight cars were coming into town four times per day! One year later, voters approved incorporation into la Crosse County; this occurred on November 20th1871! In 1895-96, local contractor J P Woods designed and built what is considered to be one of Milwaukee's first skyscrapers - 25 stories tall! Today's shopping centers nearby make it possible for everyone who wants something - big or small - to get their hands on some commerce! Today, De Pere continues its traditions as an entrepreneurial center where people come together not just for business but also for fun (eagle hunting tournaments are held each fall), music (the city has several popular venues that host live events), art (the city features many galleries) and more! It truly has become an "CIty With A Hearts And Minds" kind of place where creativity flourishes above all else!

The population was 54,521 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Racine County after Green Bay and Milwaukee. It is also one of its five congressional districts. The De Pere metropolitan area had a population of 1,119,000 as of 2017.
