The community is named after John De Pere, an early settler and merchant who donated land to the town in 1856. The village was founded on November 17, 1859 by John J. Gorman and his brother-in-law Amos Hockaday as a post office called "Pere". Gorman donation deeds specify that "the names [of] the first two storehouses & all other public buildings must be dedicated to Almighty God." Gorman also donated $1,500 for a schoolhouse and $2,000 for the purchase of land for a cemetery. In 1860, Gorman surveyed 1 ½ miles (3 km) of woodland northeast of present-day De Pere and donated it to the town with instructions that it be used as grazing land for farmers in perpetuity. In 1875, Davenport Wirth became president of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company and decided to move its headquarters from Chicago to De Pere. On October 15, 1896 – one year after Northwestern Mutual's incorporation – De Pere celebrated its centennial with an outdoor dinner at Pembroke Hall followed by parade through downtown streets decorated with banners reading "Eternal vigilance! Eternal peace!" A week later on October 24th celebration included speeches by Wirth and Mayor David Sargent before fireworks display over harbor at night. In 1898 construction began on what would become De Pere's current library building which opened in 1903; this building served as both local government center until 1959 when Green Bay County took over operations; then new county hall replaced old hall until 1996 when it reopened as the current courthouse complex. De Pere, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 7,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 11 million people. De Pere is located on the eastern bank of the Kettle River and extends into Lake Michigan to its east and west. The town was founded in 1854 by Isaac De Pere as a fur-trading post on land that he donated to the United States government after purchasing it from his father-in-law, Pierre Chouteau. The first settler in De Pere was Samuel Morse, who arrived in 1855 and built a log cabin near what is now Main Street. Morse's cabin served as headquarters for many early settlers including John Prentice, who also built an academy there in 1857; Nicholas Gage, leader of the American Revolution; Hezekiah Butterfield; Hiram Sibley; George Stephenson; and others. In 1856 Isaac De Pere sold his land to John Mapes for $8 per acre (2/3rds share). Mapes developed a large agricultural business here while also becoming one of leading lumber dealers in America during the late 19th century. By 1870 De Pere had more than 100 residents and was serving as an important transportation center for nearby towns such as Green Bay and West Allis. In 1882 Averill Harriman purchased 1/4 mile (=0.25 kilometers) ofland north of Main Street from Isaac Depere for $1 per acre (1/9th share). This tract became known as Harriman Park after Averill Harriman's grandson acquired it from him in 1932veterans' Memorial Stadium stands today on its former site within Harriman Park
De Pere was founded in 1854 by General John De Pere and his wife, Sarah. The town grew rapidly during the mid-19th century as a result of its location on the Fox River and access to transportation. In 1883, De Pere became a city.
