De Pere is a town in the Wisconsin Department of Administration, located in Ozaukee County. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. De Pere is one of the oldest towns in Wisconsin and has been inhabited by the same people for over 350 years. One of the earliest settler families in De Pere were the Henningsons who arrived about 1792 with their family wagon train from Denmark. They built a log cabin on what is now State Road 20 west of town. The first post office was established here on July 1, 1854. The first store in De Pere was founded by Mose Stromberg in 1855 when he opened a store on Main Street between US Highway 10 and Park Avenue. He also operated a bakery and grocery store next door to his business until 1861 when he closed his stores and moved to Racine, WI. In 1873, John Wray opened a general merchandise store on State Road 8 east of town which became known as Wray's Store after him. In 1907, Harry Kapp bought Wray's Store and continued to operate it until his death in 1935. In 1914, Jens Rasmussen opened his own hardware store across from Wray's Store which became known as Rasmussen's Hardware & Home Supply before being sold to Fred Pohlmann in 1948 and continuing operation as Pohlmann Hardware until 1984 when it was purchased by Hunt Companies Incorporated (later Brown-Forman) which still operates it today as Brown-Forman Hardware Ltd.. In 1951, Don Erikson began operating an electric restaurant called 'The Egg' across from Rasmussen's Hardware & Home Supply; this restaurant would later become known as Don Erikson's Place open until its closure in 1982 due to health concerns about lead contamination inside the building). A local landmark that exists today is the old brick school house that stands along State Road 20 near what is now Village Hall development (now known as Town Hall). This structure served as both a schoolhouse and municipal hall for De Pere during its early years up until 1912 when it was replaced by a new facility that still stands today. The first Europeans to visit De Pere were French traders and missionaries in 1650, who named it after Jean-Baptiste de Pere, a French nobleman. The town was incorporated as a village in 1854, and became an incorporated city in 1959. It is located on the Fox River watershed and has a population of about 606 people as of 2010. The history of De Pere can be traced back to pre-historic times. Archaeological evidence shows that humans have been living in or near De Pere for at least 10,000 years. One of the earliest known settlements was made by the Menominee tribe near present-day downtown De Pere. In 1650, French traders and missionaries called this community "Pere" after Jean-Baptiste de Peres, a French nobleman who had visited this area before. The early settlers were primarily Protestant Protestants from northern Germany who came to America during the 17th century looking for religious freedom under English rule. They arrived by way of Quebec City and founded what is now Milwaukee County along with many other communities throughout what is now Wisconsin Rapids, Michigan Territory (now Racine). The Protestant colonists brought their own churches and schools with them when they arrived; these soon became popular among local Indians who had no school systems of their own at that time. As American independence grew closer, most Germans fled British rule for America because they saw it as an opportunity for religious freedom without harsh oversight from London's ruling class – something which they could not experience behind closed doors back home where religion was tightly controlled by government authorities. The first permanent white residents of De Pere were German Catholics who settled there around 1800 as part of what was then called Holy Roman Empire (later Austria). The town of De Pere, Wisconsin was founded in 1846 by John and Rebekah De Pere. The first post office opened in De Pere on July 1, 1847. The town continued to grow rapidly, and by 1865 it had reached a population of over 100 people. In the 1870s, the De Perses developed a large lumber business, which allowed them to build a house on the corner of State and First Streets that still stands today. They also started an eccentric tradition of giving away large sums of money to anyone who could prove they had helped improve the quality of life in their community. This tradition continues to this day, with the largest donation being $100,000 made in 1984.
