In 1923, Ammo manufacturers moved their manufacturing headquarters from Chicago to De Pere after receiving incentives from Mayor Max Kapp (who at that time was also president of Winchester). The move gave Ammo access to new markets and allowed it to prosper as one of Wisconsin’s leading industry businesses. Today Ammo remains headquartered inDePere with over 60 employees across five floorspace located on Main Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue. De Pere, Wisconsin is a small town in the far northwestern corner of Wisconsin. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Brown County. The name De Pere derived from French de la Prairie meaning "of the prairies." The first people to live in what is now De Pere were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and animals in the area. In 1836, John C. Van Ness, an American fur trader and landowner, settled here and named his ranch after Pierre-André LaFontaine, a French explorer who had visited this region in 1815. LaFontaine had named some of his rivers and coves in this area for General George Washington during his tour around America in 1794-95. In 1868, De Pere became part of Chicago when that city was created from parts of eight other counties along the Michigan River Valley. At first there were few economic opportunities because Chicago was a new city with little knowledge or support for agriculture other than meatpacking industry which dominated local commerce then as it does now. However over time De Pere slowly began to diversify its economy through tourism, education and manufacturing including such industries as cheese manufacturing (from milk products), paper making (from pulpwood) and vehicle manufacture (from steel). De Pere was founded in 1848 by Methodist missionaries as a station on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The original town name was Plymouth. The first post office opened in 1850 and the town became a city in 1907. The village of De Pere began to form around 1800 when farmers started to move into this area from outlying areas of La Crosse County. By 1828, there were about seventy-five people living within the present-day boundaries of De Pere. In 1847, John Prentice built a sawmill on the south side of the river near what is now Main Street. soon after he started making lumber for local homes and businesses which would become known as Prentice Lumber Company until 1865 when it merged with another lumber company called Taylor & Wigglesworth to form the Milwaukee & Ohio Railway Company Limited Partnership which would later be turned into an autonomous public company named Milwaukee Corporation Limited In 1852, Amos Butterfield established a flour mill north of town on what is today Elmira Road Northeast which would become one of America's leading flour mills and continue operating until 1959 when it closed due to consolidation among other textile companies further development including building stores, churches and schools followed but didnt result in any significant growth until after World War II when automobiles made travel more accessible and demand for goods increased along with new housing developments following war rationing
