Cudahy is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Ojibwe word "kuh-dah-hyee" meaning " great place to hunt." The first settler in Cudahy was James Baugh (1810–1892). Baugh came to the area in 1836 and started a farm on the east side of the present day village of Cudahy. He named his farm for General John Custer who had died in 1873 at the age of 30 after leading an expedition against Sitting Bull. In 1881, Wm. Hodge bought land from James Baugh and started a mill on what is now Main Street. Hodge built three houses on the property which are still standing today: One is currently used as a detachment office for Door County Sheriff's Department; another two are used as classrooms at nearby Whitewater High School; and the third house is preserved as evidence at Highway 44 Milepost 5 near Forestville. In 1903, Jens Jacobsen arrived in Cudahy and opened a grocery store called Jacobsen's Mercantile Company which became one of Door County's largest businesses. In 1916, he built a new store on First Avenue which remains operational today as First Avenue Grocery & Bakery Incorporated. In 1935, Jens Jacobsen married Lillian Kappelbaum and they moved their business into their own building on Second Avenue which still stands today as Kappelbaum's Supermarket Incorporated. In 1951, Jens Jacobsen passed away and his wife Lillian took over running their company until her death in 1984. After Lillian's death, her son Orville took over management until his retirement in 1998 when current ownership passes to grandson Dan Kappelbaum Jr.. .Dan has been managing since then with help from his wife Deborah who runs operations out of their home gymnasium adjacent to First Avenue Grocery & Bakery Incorporated..
