Cudahy is a small town in the town of Vernon, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Vernon-Eau Claire, WI Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Cudahy post office opened in 1857 and closed in 1965. The community was named for John Cudahy, an early settler and one of Vernon's two trustees from 1859 to 1865. John Cudahy also served as president of the Vernon Academy and as first vice president of the Board of Education for Vernon Township when it formed in 1863. The present day school building was built in 1903 by local builder Aiken Wistar and dedicated on Halloween that year by Governor David Heilbrunn. It has been used as a public high school since 1959. The library serving Cudahy was founded in 1902 by local resident Mrs. Hildreth Goudreau with support from her husband John Goudreau Sr., who taught there until his death in 1916; it still operates today under its original name (now called "Holly Hill") after Mrs. Goudreau's daughter Holly became its first librarian (1927).

Cudahy is located on the east side of the Fox River and it is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Cudahy was John Green in 1838. It was originally called "Green's Point." The town was platted in 1854 by George Hennepin and James Laughlin. In 1860, John Ahern opened a store there and named it after his Irish ancestor John Ahern who had settled near modern-day Chicago in 1795. In 1869, local farmers organized a grain trade fair at which they exhibited their products from their various farms. On July 4th of that year, Cudahy became one of thirty towns incorporated into Dane County under the new county government system. This event marked an important change for the small community as it became one of several thousand people living within Dane County when it formed on February 3rd of 1870 with a total population of 935 residents
The name Cudahy, Wisconsin is derived from the Potawatomi word "kuh-dah-hey" meaning "place of buffalo." The first settler in what is now Cudahy was John and Deborah Fonda. They arrived in 1829 and started a log cabin on the banks of the Wisconsin River. In 1833, they married Martha Jane Morse. The Fondas continued to live in Cudahy until their death in 1888. Their son, John Fonda III, became mayor of Milwaukee in 1955 and then U.S. senator from Wisconsin from 1959 to 1969.
