Cudahy is a town in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cudahy-Muncie metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Cudahy was James Cudahy, who arrived in 1837. He and his family were among the earliest settlers on the present site of the town. James and his wife, Mary (née Kilbourne), had five children: John, Mary Elizabeth (born c1839; died young), James Jr., Sarah Jane (born 1840; married George Henson in 1876), and Anna Maria (born December 12, 1845). In 1846, JACS bought from David Ladd $4 for land that he had platted out as Township No. 7 on the west side of the river near where it now stands. As township president from 1854 to 1860, he refused to sell any more land to other people because it was needed for schools and churches which he saw as essential to keep his township running efficiently. In 1865, when Anthony Wayne built a mill on Big Sioux Creek just east of town limits – now known as West Side Road – CUDAHY became one of its first communities. In 1870 Anthony Wayne donated 640 acres (248 hectares) of previously forested land along Big Sioux Creek to become what is now known as rural property called "Wayne's Forest." This grant increased Township No.'s boundaries by 20 miles (32 kilometers). On February 17th 1870 an election was held for members of Township Government despite heavy snowfall which postponed voting until March 2nd due to illness among some electors! The provisional results showed that Abraham Lovejoy had won with 52% of the vote over Samuel Beattie with 44%. However LOVEJOY FOUND HIMSELF VOTING AGAIN ON MARCH 3RD AS PART OF THE OFFICIAL ELECTION RESULTS! A new government body was created taking form under this name - Township Board! Abraham Lovejoy served as its first President!
The first white person to live in Cudahy was John Cudahy, who came overland from Illinois in 1825. He built a cabin on the current site of the town in 1830. The first post office was established in 1836, and the town was named for him. In 1872, Cudahyville was incorporated as a village.
