Cudahy, Wisconsin is a small town located in the county of Inverness, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. Cudahy was first settled in 1851 and has been continuously inhabited since then. The town lies on the banks of the Cudahy River, which forms part of the border between Manitowoc and Racine counties. The town was incorporated on December 1, 1872. It is named for General Oliver Hazard Perry's son-in-law, Daniel Cudahy. Daniel had arrived in America from Ireland in 1853 and married Esther Beall in 1861. They founded a lumber company in Cudahy and later made their home there with their children until 1966 when they moved to Manitowoc. Daniel died in 1911 and Esther died in 1978; both are buried at Evergreen Cemetery east of town. The early settlers were farmers who raised corn, wheat, potatoes, chickens, pigs and horses; but by 1900 most residents were engaged in manufacturing or trade services such as grocery stores, printing presses and carriages/drawn wagons used by local farmers to transport goods to marketplaces around the area. Manufacturing activity began to decline during World War II because of wartime production demands; however it revived after 1945 when demand for consumer durables slackened following technological advances like synthetic fabrics and plastics that replaced natural materials like wood pulp for papermaking purposes.
