The name comes from a confluence of two rivers, the Chippewa and Oneida. The first post office in Chippewa Falls opened on December 2, 1847. It was renamed Appleton in 1857 after James G. Appleton, a merchant and politician who served as mayor of Milwaukee from 1865 to 1870 and as United States Senator from Wisconsin from 1875 to 1889. It was one of only a few “towns” in Wisconsin created at this time with no city designation or public works program until 1968 when Milwaukee was designated as the capital of Wisconsin by then Governor Nelson Rockefeller. The town has experienced many different types of growth over its history including commercial development (especially during World War II), population growth (due to increased immigration), technological advances such as internet access and smart phones, professional development (including medical care), and natural disasters such as fires and floods which have made it an important community resource for both locals and visitors alike. Today, Chippewa Falls is known for its Manufacturing industry along with several restaurants, bars/nightlife venues, churches/mosques/temples (particularly around Christmas time) and attractions like Discovery Park which offers water skiing/kayaking/canoeing etc., as well as hiking and biking trails throughout the community. Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in the early 1800s. The area now known as Chippewa Falls was part of the Menominee Indian Nation until 1833. In 1851, a group of settlers named Stevens and others traveled from Minnesota to Chippewa Falls and founded the town of Stevensville on the banks of the frozen River Main. The town quickly grew and by 1854 had a population of 100 people. in 1865, Chippewa Falls became a city under the name Stevensville. In 1905, it merged with the nearby town of Richmond to form the current city of Milwaukee.
