Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin that is located on the Chippewa River. The population was 25,752 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in Wisconsin after Milwaukee. It is also the largest city in Dane County and one of its five cities. The area now known as Chippewa Falls were first settled by French missionaries in 1753 and were named for two rivers that flow through them- the Chippewa and La Crosse. The first permanent white settlement was founded in 1836 when John Gregg built a saw mill on Lillie Creek near present-day downtown Chippewa Falls. In 1846, General James Kossuth's ill-fated Expedition against Mexico resulted in heavy losses for both sides as well as much destruction along the river's banks; this led to many settlers migrating to Iowa or Nebraska over subsequent years. However, by 1850 there were more than 100 people living hereabouts due to new lumbering and agricultural development downriver along what are now I-90 and Wabash Avenue (now Main Street). In 1854, a group of businessmen from Dubuque formed a company to build a water power dam on Lillie Creek so they could produce electric lights for marketplaces across town; this company became known asthe United States Electric Light Company (USELC). By 1870 there were more than 2,000 residents hereabouts with mills, stores, churches and other public buildings providing services such as schools and post offices. The railroad arrived in 1892 bringing great change with it: railroads brought new jobsites closer to town while also spurring transportation investments that helped create an ever larger residential area immediately east of downtown where factories replaced homes until World War II when industry shifted again towards mining and farming activities which have continued into today's day; following World War II many people moved away from towns like Chippewa Falls because of high taxes associated with postwar industries such as educationally oriented Steelworkers' Local No. 527 which had been organized during that time around strikes against steel production at various plants throughout America caused by automation measures implemented during those years called "catastrophic engineering". Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin is a town in Chippewa County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern border of Chippewa County and the city of Milwaukee. The first Europeans to visit Chippewa Falls were French traders in 1753-54. A trading post was established by Pierre Marquette in 1763 and it became known as "the Post of the Woods." In 1837, a bridge over the Menominee River was built and named for General Winfield Scott Hancock. The town name changed to Chippewa Falls in 1892 when railroad construction began nearby. The first electric lights were installed in Chippewa Falls in 1903. By 1907, there were five hotels and twenty-five stores in the town. The population peaked at 4,848 during World War II when many men from aroundWisconsin came to work on D-Day beaches along Normandy Coast. After the war ended, however, economic prosperity declined until the late 1990s when a number of new businesses opened up including several restaurants and nightlife venues such as Regal Cinemas and First Avenue Live! According to the United States Census Bureau, Chippewa Falls has a total area of , all land.
Chippewa Falls was first settled in 1834 by the Gadabouts, a people of the Ottawa band of Indians. The town was platted in 1842 by John Sauer and named for the Chippewa River. In 1863, general Ambrose Burnside and his army besieged the town during the American Civil War, but were forced to retreat after being repulsed at every turn. The town was abandoned in 1865.
