Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin is a small town in the central part of the state of Wisconsin. It is located on the River Othello and was founded in 1853 by John Chippewa and his wife Elizabeth. The community has a population of about 350 people. The town was originally named for the Chippewa Indians who inhabited this area before European settlement. In 1853, John Chippewa purchased land in what is now Chippewa Falls from the Sauk tribe. He built a log cabin and named it after himself, Chipperwawa or "Falls of the Othello". The first store opened in 1855 and by 1865, there were six stores in the town. In 1907, Chippewa Falls had a post office with two buildings and fifty-four citizens. By 1912, there were four churches, two schools, three factories, one livery stable and one garage. In 1916-1917, there was an floods that destroyed most of downtown Chippewa Falls; however new construction resumed soon afterwards with help from federal funds In 1939-1945 World War II saw some significant changes at Chippewa Falls as residents turned to their local farms for food production during what would be dubbed America's Great Depression The post office closed in 1951 but since then various businesses have opened up including: Anheuser Busch Brewery (1964), Kohl's department store (1978), ABC Corporation (1991), JCPenney (1996) and Husson's Fine Foods Inc.(2005). A new high school was built in 1990 which now serves as the home to local government offices such as government liaison services for city departments
