Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin is a town located in Kane County, Illinois. Chippewa Falls was founded in 1853 by the Chippewa Indians and named for the falls that crossed the Kankakee River in their territory. The first settler in Chippewa Falls was John Cook, who built a cabin on the banks of the Kankakee River. In 1856, James Denny established a post office at Chippewa Falls and became one of the first farmers in Kane County. Denny also donated land to establish the village of Chippewa Falls. The village was incorporated as a municipality in 1914 and remains an active community today. The history of Chippewa Falls begins with its location on high ground overlooking both the Kankakee River and Chicago Lake. The fall line forms part of what is now known as Denny Township, which was organized from parts of Kane County on November 5, 1853. At that time there were no villages within Kane County and only two small towns - Crystal City (later called Crystal Springs) and Sheboygan - lay within Ottawa Township east of Green Bay. By 1861, however, all but three miles of Ottawa Township had been organized into Kane County; this left only ChippEWA FALLS unincorporated Territory lying within its borders. As development proceeded alongriverfronts near Chicago Landing – including new settlements at Waukesha (1864), Menomonee Falls (1868), Racine (1871), Racine Heights (1872), Stone Mills (1875) – boundaries between communities began to blur even more: What once had been considered rural areas became inner-city neighborhoods or industrial districts; while what used to be agricultural lands became urban wards with heavy industry based upon lumbering interests developing large mills on riverbankside sites dating back to early 19th century railroads serving these locations such as Sheboygan’s Milwaukee Road Station on South Avenue nearpresent-day First National Bank building . . . Incorporation created additional civic functions for towns like Sheboygan by providing infrastructure such as schools and fire protection; this pattern continued throughout most of Illinois until after World War II when suburban growth caused municipalities to lose power over streets, water supplies, schools etc.,although some continue to operate independently under different names
The Chippewa Falls area was first settled by the Ojibwe in the 18th century. The first white person to live in the area was John Stevens, who founded a trading post at Chippewa Falls in 1792. In 1834, a group of Wisconsin pioneers traveled through the region and discovered gold near present-day Chippewa Falls. The gold rush brought new settlers to the area, and development began around what is now Chippewa Falls High School and South Park Elementary School. By 1860, the population of Chippewa Falls had increased to over 1,000 people. In 1907, Congress passed the Indian Reorganization Act which among other things gave tribal members control over their land and resources. This led to more development in the area as businesses sprang up aroundIndianola Mall and Wabasha Avenue. In 1929, construction began on Wisconeside Boulevard which would later become State Highway 12. The corridor was developed as an expressway serving Milwaukee County and became one of Wisconsin's most important thoroughfares.
