Cedarburg, Wisconsin is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 10,824 at the 2010 census. Cedarburg was founded in 1847 and incorporation took place on February 11, 1851. Cedarburg is located at (43.964801, -87.766836). The first settler in what is now Cedarburg was David Hillyer who arrived there in 1847 with his family from Vermont. David's son John settled there in 1848 and his grandson Isaac also lived there for a time before moving to Richland County and starting his own farm. In 1861, the area that would become Cedarburg was surveyed by General James Ketchum and named after him because of its similarity to the Ketchum Ranch on which he had served as military officer during the American Civil War. The townsite was platted by George Haggerty on December 15th, 1871 following a land donation from Haggerty's widow Anna Laughlin Haggerty. A post office called Haggertyville was established in 1870, but it closed within a year due to low postal demand. Cedarburg went through various changes during its early years- from an agricultural center with few manufacturing facilities to one of the most heavily populated areas of Dane County by 1920 when its population reached 20,000 people; however industrial growth didn't arrive until after World War II when Cedarburg became home to two major employers: Coleman Manufacturing Company and US Steel Corporation both based here since 1923 as part of nearby Racine/Wisconsin Workshops site production begun for Boeing 707s and other jets before ending operations in 1960 followed by other heavy industry closures over ensuing decades including Allis Chalmers Paper Company which abruptly shuttered all operations here c1990 leaving just light paper products behind until 2000 marked by simultaneous closure of local mills owned & operated by White River Paper Co., successor company to parent company JCPenney Inc.; this led directly to increased wood chips used for insulation being dumped unsold into river near community & resulting environmental impact leading finally to acquisition of former paper plant site by Northrop Grumman Corporation Markets After successful completion of initial phase 1B recapitalization effort during 2009-2012 led ultimately to acquisition of entire whiteRiver PaperCo business - www .northropgrummancom
