Cedarburg is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the east side of the Oneida River. The population was 6,827 at the 2010 census. Cedarburg is part of the Kenosha–Waukesha County metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Cedarburg were Swedish farmers who arrived in 1837 and named their farm "Emmen". The name Cedarburg was given to it by a group of men who went there on a camping trip in 1841 when they discovered cedar trees growing near by. The first post office was established in 1846, and the town was platted in 1849. The town was named for Cedar Creek which flows through it. In 1853, David Dixon built a gristmill here that became one of Wisconess leading mills and still operates today as Cedarbrook Mill & Gristmills Incorporated (CWGI). This mill played an important role during Wisconsin’s early agricultural history with its wide variety of products including flour, malt syrup, oats and other cereal grains, cheese and butter, eggs and bacon; also later production included paper products such as towels, napkins and paper cups. In 1907-1908, CWGI constructed a new mill complex that included four giant water wheels that turned an estimated 1 million pounds (454 metric tons) of flour per day into paper products such as towels, napkins and paper cups; also produced were chemicals used in many industrial processes such as plastics manufacturing From 1967 until 1969 Cedarberg had its own radio station WKCR which broadcast on 95 FM from studios located adjacent to WMATA's Green Line train stop on North Washington Street across from downtown Cedarburg. WDTE-FM simulcast this station from 1969 until 1995 when it merged with WKCR to form WWLQ-FM which continues to operate today under new ownership As Prairie Avenue widened following construction of I-94 northward starting around 1990 both sides began losing businesses to larger intersections opening up more space between businesses becoming difficult or impossible for smaller businesses along either side to survive without moving out altogether making way for strip malls full of fast food restaurants etc., Willow Glen Shopping Center being just one example among many throughout much rural America hit hard by changes resulting from advances economic growth while at the same time small towns struggling
