At that time, there were no schools outside of Douglas County so many children had to attend school here while their parents worked at the mill. During World War I, local residents helped with military service by helping builds roadsides and other tasks related to war effort. After the war ended it became difficult for many farmers to continue producing crops due to lack of market demand so they turned towards manufacturing goods like shoes or bicycles as their primary source of income during this time period . In 1904, Cedarburg was renamed after James Biddle Gentry, Jr., the original founder of Gentry Farms empire in La Crosse County
