Cedarburg is a small town in the Wisconsin Rapids metropolitan area. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedarburg-Stroudsburg Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1847 by George Fenton and his wife Mary Ann Fenton. Cedarburg was named after Cedar Creek in Virginia. The first post office opened in 1848. In 1865, Cedarburg became a city and had a population of 15,000 people. The city was dissolved in 1972 and its citizens were incorporated into the new town of Stroudsburg. Cedarburg has a rich history that goes back to when it was founded by George Fenton and his wife Mary Ann Fenton. In 1847, they came from Virginia to settle in what is now Cedarburg-Stroudsburg Township on the banks of the Kinnickinnic River. They named their settlement after Cedar Creek in Virginia where they had been born some years earlier. George worked as a surveyor for General John Brown during the War of 1812 and afterwards he started his own surveying business which continued until he died in 1845. A year later, his widow married John Dutton and began farming with her husband’s land until she too passed away in 1861 aged 54 years old. Their three children — Anna (1849-1907), Edwin (1851-1925) and Sarah (1853-1920) — also followed their parents into farming life as did their six grandchildren before Anna’s death at 82 years old on October 25th, 2007; Edwin’s death at 79 years old on July 29th, 2003; Sarah’s death at 83 years old on November 1st, 1981; both deaths certificates list her as “widowed Mrs Geo R Dutton”). For many decades following these fateful events – one that shook not only this small community but rural America more broadly – families would gather around Mrs Dutton’s fireplaces each evening to tell stories about their deceased relative or about some special event connected with her person or life within this tight knitknit community… even going so far as to keep calendars full calendar months ahead of time! Cedarburg was founded in 1836 by the Cedar family. The town was originally named Maple Leaf and changed its name to Cedarburg in 1852 when a post office was established there. The population of Cedarburg peaked at 5,000 in the early 1800s, but has since shrunk to around 1,200. The town is located just south of Green Bay on the border of the towns of Appleton and New Berlin. The first settler in what would become Cedarburg was John Fenton who arrived in 1836. He and his wife, Sarah, were the first people to live in what would later be called Cedarburg. John Fenton's brother-in-law, Daniel Boone also moved into the area around this time and began trading with Indians. In 1840, Isaac Watts purchased 8 acres of land east of present day Elm Street from Daniel Boone for $100 dollars plus 10% interest. This land became known as Happy Valley because it housed many happy occasions such as weddings and fairs held there annually. In 1851, two brothers named George bought 6 acres nearpresentday Elm Street from Isaac Watts for $30 dollars cash only! These men were instrumental in starting up some of Green Bay's earliest businesses including a millinery shop and blacksmith shop that still stands today! In 1865/66 during a severe famine that swept Wisconsin,[1] local farmers started growing corn on their properties which helped feed the city of Green Bay during that difficult time period. Additionally, various industries have been based or have sprung up around Cedarburg over time such as manufacturing (watchmaker Jackson & Sons; grocery store Jethro’s); transportation (railroad tracks running through town);[2] health care (hospital nuptials being celebrated at nearby Mount Olivet Baptist Church each year until 1954).[3][4] In recent decades − especially following World War II − Cedarburg has experienced rebirth with several new businesses opening up including an arts center[5],[6]; revival centers for small businesses such as First United Methodist Church;[7] a fitness center;[8] and even a brewery! Some residents are now using their businesses to revive downtown areas while others continue to support agriculture via home farming programs.[9],[10] Despite these recent successes, much work still needs to be done before Cedarburg can achieve its full potential both socially AND economically.[11],[12],[13],[14]=
