In 1861, Caledonia became attached to Green Bay and soon began to prosper as a commercial center due to its location at the junction of two wagon routes and its access to transportation including stagecoaches and ferries across Lake Michigan. In 1865, local citizens formed a fire department which still exists today; this event helped establishCaledonia as an important community during what would be known as America’s Civil War period (1861-1865). During these years, Caledonia experienced heavy military activity with soldiers drawn from all over Illinois Territory; many residents enlisted in service or were drafted into Confederate armies during this time period. Some aspects of daily life such as food production or currency exchange were interrupted while troops fought but all returned home safely after brief periods away from their homes later that year.
