However, target shootings continued until 1911 when a new ordinance was passed that allowed people to shoot at animals only if they were coming out of a farmhouse. This ordinance indicated that the townspeople considered firearms not as toys but as necessary tools for hunting and protection against predators. The first settler in Caledonia was James Hake in 1836. The present day town was platted in 1859 by George Waddell and named for Cadenonia on the Tennessee River. There are few if any historic buildings remaining from this time period as most of the original settlers moved away after developing new towns around them or died out due to disease or other reasons. The post office served Caledonia from 1859 until it was discontinued in 1934. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,721 people, 613 households, and 472 families residing in the town. The population density was 509 people per square mile (220/km²). There were 764 housing units at an average density of 246 per square mile (98/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 99% White and 0% African American.[1] Hispanic or Latino residents made up 2% of the population

In 1865, Caledonia became a city when it merged with other nearby towns to form the City of Chicago Township No. 4 (later Cook County). In 1898, Mayor John Jarry formed a committee to study ways to improve transportation available within the city limits of Chicago. The committee's report recommended that Caledonia be connected by road to Chicagoland through what would become known as "the Great Lakes Highway." However, this proposal never received much attention from either the city or township governments until later years. In 1912, plans were made for a new expressway called State Road 59 which would connect Illinois and Michigan airports via Caledonia; however these plans also failed to materialize. These systems ran from 1915 until 1922 when they were replaced by buses. After several more unsuccessful attempts throughout 1916-1920s it finally got moving again when then-mayor John Jarry convinced trustees Harry Bealand Arthur Weisner and Julius Rosenwaldof Sears Roebuck & Co., Inc., owners of Kress Corporation (a manufacturer of radios) to invest $500,000 into developing Caledoni­an bus service pursuantTo their agreement that Kress would provide delivery services for all busloads arriving or departing at McCormick Airfieldfrom downtownChicago. With this investment came Hankook Bus Lines LLC as America's FirstBus Company. This led eventually to today's operation as PaceBus RTD medallion company providing urban express bus service linking downtown Chicago with outlying communities like Downers Grove/Skokie/Rochester Hills/Niles Landing
