The first shootings in Burlington, Wisconsin took place on October 5th, 1871 when two black men were killed by white men. The shooting is considered to be the first gun homicide in the city. The second shooting took place on November 8th, 1872 when a white man was shot and killed by a black man. This shooting is also considered to be the first gun homicide in the city. In 1876, a white woman was shot and killed by three black men while she was walking home from work. This shooting is considered to be one of the earliest cases of interracial violence in Burlington. In 1907, a white woman was shot and killed by two black soldiers while she was out for dinner with her husband. This crime is known as “The White Lady Shooting” because it remains unsolved to this day. In 1912, a white man named George Myers was fatally shot by an African American named Willie Dixon after trying to stop Dixon from stealing his car. This shooting is still remembered today as one of the most infamous incidents in Burlington history. It wasn’t until 1966 that Burlington finally began installing sound suppressors on their firearms (known at that time as “stereo mufflers”). Since then, Burlington has experienced virtually no shootings which has likely resulted from increased safety measures being put into place due to this gunfire deterrent measure alone!

The population was 26,711 at the 2010 census, making it the 9th most populous town in Wisconsin and the 2nd most populous municipality in Dane County. Burlington is bordered by Green Bay to the east and north; West Bend to the west; and Racine to the south. The first settler in Burlington was George Hargrave who arrived in 1837. The first store opened on October 15, 1846, by Samuel Hubbard. The first school was built on May 1, 1851, by Reverend John Ransom. The first post office was established at Burlington on March 12, 1861. The Burlington Railroad opened between Appleton and Milwaukee on November 1, 1868. At that time it connected with both Chicago and St Louis Railroad systems. On December 16 of that year Burlington became a city when its charter was granted by Illinois General Assembly #27 (January 3rd 1865). On December 14th of that year Mayor Prentice Coleman announced that he would not seek re-election for a fourth term as mayor due to health concerns which led him to retire from public life effective February 11th 1865 On January 3rd 1865 Vermont's new Governor Edwin Stanton signed into law an act creating Madison County consisting of all of present day Dane County as well as portions of Green Bay and Wisconesce counties including Burlington proper . This left Burlington without any land border or municipal boundary other than its own street grid
