Burlington, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Dane County. The population was 54,651 at the 2010 census, making Burlington one of the most populous cities in Wisconsin and its surrounding counties. Burlington also has a large military community with over 100 active duty members of the United States Military Academy's Cadet Squadron 1 located in downtown Burlington. The first settler in what is now Burlington was John Nicholson who arrived on October 27, 1838 from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with his family. The town was platted on December 6, 1838 by Nicholas Cushman and others under the name "Newbern." On March 14, 1840, it was renamed "Burlington" after John Burke who had come to live there as part of an effort to build a wagon road from Green Bay to Milwaukee through land that had been part of Racine Township south of today's city limits. In 1849-50, Burlington became capital of Dane County because Milwaukee chose not to become a county Seat; this caused some resentment among residents who saw their city decline while Milwaukee grew wealthier. In 1870s and 1880s many families moved into what is now north central Wisconsin due to new industrialization including breweries such as Anheuser Busch (now Budweiser) and Wabash Brewing which were built near present day Watertown and Eau Claire respectively. North centralWI played a significant role in American Civil War because much conflict took place here along Lake Michigan between Union forces commanded by General George McClellan (the campaigns Battle Of Antietam & The Peninsula) and Confederate forces under General Robert Eicke led by General James Longstreet (the campaign Andover). The largest employer in Burlington during this time period was AnheuserBusch which opened up several breweries throughout northcentral WI during this time including River Falls Brewery near present day Menasha/Waukesha Junction; North End Brewery at South Bend; Whitefish Brewery located just outside Madison; and Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewing Company which opened up in nearby Appleton later becoming Nestlé Waters America Inc.. One notable development that occurred during these years was that railroad companies began purchasing or leasing land for manufacturing sites within towns or villages so that when they built stations or tracks within those communities these factories could be easily accessed by trains leaving from various points around the country providing jobs for locals as well as supplying goods to larger mills downeast adjacent to major railroad routes like Erie & Ironton NJ etc.. Two major newspapers published in Burlington during this time period were The Daily Sentinel (founded 1865) which focused on news local to Burlington while The Tribune (founded 1878) covered events happening east of the Mississippi River including Buffalo New York Massacre - an event that helped spark America’s civil war Both papers changed their names multiple times during their careers reflecting changes occurring within both the paper industry itself as well as within Vermont’s political landscape In 1907–08 editor Julius Rosenwald purchased control of Tribune Holdings Corporation – then known as Chicago American Publishing Company – creating one of America’s first cross-border media empires Through Rosenwald’s ownership purchase he also became indirectly responsible for introducing modern advertising techniques such developing stop motion animation technology for movies such Lubitsch Films early classic comedies like Two Thousand Leagues Underwater! Additionally he funded numerous other innovative journalistic endeavors across multiple platforms including founding magazine Time Out New York City where he served as Editor-in-Chief until his death aged 97 years old After Rosenwald died his son Sam purchased control becoming Sam Spiegelman until 2011 when he sold all his holdings back to Tribune Media Co., LLC effective July 1st . By 1910, however, progress had stalled due to technological advancements that mademanufacturing more automated while also reducing labor costs abroad which impacted many smaller American cities unable to compete with those countries’ innovative economies. As a result of these changing conditions, World War I forced much larger American cities like Detroit into bankruptcy while smaller communities like Burlington failed to adapt or even benefit from their economic growth opportunities; becoming “lost causes” within their own right until they were reborn as urban cores during prohibition era Main Street Revivals in various Milwaukee County communities such as Waukesha (1929), Racine (1941), Menomonee Falls (1965), Oshkosh (1980)and Kenosha (2002).
