Burlington is located on both sides of Lake Michigan, making it an important departure point for transportation and trade between the Midwest and the Great Lakes region. The first settlers to arrive in Burlington were men from Denmark who had come overland from that country during the 1830s and 1840s. The original town site was selected because it would be close to two other settlements, Oneonette on the north side of Lake Michigan and Waukesha on its south side. In 1836, permission was given by Gov. Lewis Cass to begin construction on what would become Burlington with land purchased from Ishmael Beal (1) and Peter Kapp (2). The first buildings were erected at what is now South Waterfront Park in downtown Burlington; they were a log cabin known as “The Gull’s Nest” which served as their social center until 1840 when a building more appropriate for such an affair was built at present day North Waterfront Park across from Beloit College where dances were held every Sunday evening until 1865 when they became Saturday nights due to prohibitionism laws then being prevalent throughout much of America In 1848, after years of hard work by many citizens, City Hall could be said to have been built “upon a solid foundation” when Mayor John Dickinson announced that all public improvements within five miles (8 km) of City Hall including Streets, Buildings & Roads should be surveyed at once for cost only $5 per mile! This early success signaled another era for Burlington with its own permanent government which would continue until annexation by Milwaukee in 1898 . When Milwaukee annexed Burlington along with other towns within boundaries set by Governor Levi Morton as part of his efforts to create new towns westward along the Chicago River - Wellington Point being one - this left Burlington without any form of government or infrastructure save for streets and pieces of sidewalk still standing today !! These days you can find numerous examples including several churches still standing right next door to each other complete without care or upkeep since those days !! As time passed however some developers began looking into ways to bring more attention and investment into what had already begun becoming an established community with successful businesses such as Jens Jensen Chevrolet (now Goodyear Tire & Rubber), Radio Shack, Sears & Roebuck department store etc., but few actually took advantage fully because there simply wasn't enough money available yet !! This sad reality led some residents who felt forgotten or unimportant suddenly banding together with little hope or trust for anything coming their way starting something we call "The Movement" soon followed suit ....... With no real governing authority outside our own small group we started petitioning our county commissioners asking them if they could get us some help funding things like parks/parks officers etc., but again nothing came through so we quickly turned towards our fellow citizens starting meetings at night inside City Hall just like always trying my best not let feelings get outta hand ..... We quickly realized that if we wanted things done our community would have TO START DOING THEM ITSELF !! We weren't going ask anyone else then each other what we needed & then take matters into our own hands ...........Slowly but surely people started leaving because they couldn't stomach living under these conditions anymore ...... eventually leading us right back where we started ..... groceries went up prices everywhere local businesses closed down due lackadaisical management .........................It's been said that this type OF COMMUNITY MANAGEMENT ISN'T QUITE DIFFERENT FROM WHAT HAPPENED IN THE GOOD EARLY DAYS WHEN WE FIRST STARTED BEGGIN TO FORM OUR OWN SOCIETY BUT WITH MORE POWER BACK UP AT THE COUNCIL TABLE
