Burlington, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Milwaukee County. The population was estimated to be 753,824 as of January 1, 2019, making it the most populous city in Wisconsin and the third-most populous municipality in the United States after New York City and Los Angeles. Burlington is home to both Marquette University and Waukesha University (the second largest university system in Wisconsin). The city has been called "The Blade Capital of America" for its production of high-quality knives. The first knife factory was established in 1854 in what is now downtown Burlington by George Lillis and Samuel Morse. By 1897, there were over thirty knife factories operating in Burlington. In 1898, Griggs Knife Company became one of the first companies to mass produce knives commercially with their new plant on North First Street between West Side Avenue and Water Street. This factory produced some iconic designs such as the Griggs Model K1 which remains today one of America's most popular folders. Over time other companies followed Griggs into producing quality knives including Peacemaker Cutlery (1901), Boker Knife & Tool Co.(1902), Stevens Fork Knife Factory(1904), Wilkinson Sword Works(1906), McCormick & Co.(1920), Joplin Cutlery Manufacturing Co.(1920), Hallett Knives(1922) and finally American Classic Knife Company(1945). In 1950, Waukesha's Central Technical School opened its doors with a program entitled "Engineering How To Make Your Own Knives." apprenticeship programs soon followed at various local businesses throughout the city including HallettKnives where many prominent knifemakers initially trained their apprentices before starting their own businesses. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, Americans began returning home with new skills for creating blade products such as woodworking and metalworking which led to increased demand for handmade knives from consumers across America? At this point backyard knifemakers took up arms against professional manufacturers who had taken over traditional handcrafting techniques - resulting in a series ofknife wars that continue to this day.
