Burlington, Wisconsin is a small town located in the state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is the 5th most populous city in Milwaukee County and home to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Burlington was founded on May 25, 1871 by John Nicolay and Edwin Emerson as a post office. At that time, it was only a few miles from Milwaukee. The first handguns were made here in Burlington. A gunsmith named Wigglesworth patented his design for a trigger guard on December 3, 1875. He sold his patent to James Fenton of Boston, Massachusetts on January 8, 1876. By 1880, there were already over 100 handgun manufacturers in Burlington (including Wigglesworth). The gun industry changed dramatically during World War I when millions of Americans needed to arm themselves and buy guns in order to serve in the war effort. Gun manufacturers had difficulty meeting demand because they produced pistols only for military use and not civilian use (such as handguns). As a result of this change in policy, many firearms companies failed during World War I. However, two main pioneers within the gun industry – Glock AG and Smith & Wesson – survived this difficult period and became major players within the firearm world after World War II.

Burlington is known for its rich history and architecture, which can be seen in its many churches, museums, and other buildings dating back to 1847. The city also contains one of the largest shopping districts in the Midwest and is home to numerous cultural attractions including two major art galleries, several theatres, and two professional football teams - the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Bucks. The first settlement in what is now Burlington was made on September 24, 1847 by James McIntosh and his family after they arrived from Connecticut on their boat Thetis at the mouth of the Menomonee River. McIntosh named his new town Burlington after himself, using a term he had used earlier for blast furnace towns near Detroit Michigan that were beginning to become prosperous due to advances insteel production. A post office called Burlington was established in 1849, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1854–55 Burlington became home to one of America's first public libraries when John Fenton bought land adjacent to Lake Superior for $10 per acre (0·86 ha). Fenton built a large brick library with a capacity of 100 volumes per hour on March 12th, 1855 – making it America's first public library system with self-service borrowing (later supplemented by card reading). In 1860s construction began on what would become one of North America's largest religious cathedrals - Trinity Episcopal Church located at 701 State Street – designed by architect Ebenezer Howardigon with plans provided by Bishop George Whitefield of New York City based on designs he had seen while touring Great Britain during his travels between 1840-1846]. In 1865–66 Burlington became home to North American's second national soldiers' hospital when General Ambrose Burnside erected Fort Snelling on high ground east side of current University Avenue (now Wabash Avenue) opposite our present firehouse [FORT SNELL National Historic Site]. That same year saw another important milestone for Burlington when it became home to both West Point College Prep School[now part of Eastman School District] as well as South High School; both schools were opened as vocational programs providing education for working class boys only [today these institutions are integrated into Southwestern Illinois Community Colleges]. With increasing industrialization around this time there appeared throughout much needed need for skilled labor but nothing could come close to meeting those needs until World War II when newly developed transportation systems facilitated easy access across international borders allowing people throughout North America access good paying jobs]. It wasn't until 1950 that Interstate 94 was constructed through central Vermont connecting Chicago Illinois with MadisonWisconsin via Milwaukee County [] making Burlington easily accessible from all corners of our continent]. The 50’s were also very busy years for local business as more than 25 new businesses were established during that decade including 3 banks which remain active today - First National Bank (1957), Peoples Gas Company (1961), & United States Post Office (1966)]. During this time many residences were erected along State Street near where we currently have our government building located [] giving us our name “The City within a City” ].
The first white person to live in Burlington, Wisconsin was John L. Bourke in 1836. The town was named for General George Washington and Captain James Bourke who explored the area in 1834. Burlington became a village on December 22, 1841. On November 1, 1847, the first municipal election was held in Burlington and the town voted to become a city on November 10th of that year. The population of Burlington reached 914 on July 1st of 1860. On September 25th of that year, Burlington made history when it became the first city in Wisconsin to issue its own currency- the $1 note which lasted until 1907.
