The history of firearms in Burlington, Wisconsin goes back to 1847. That year, the first gun shop in town was opened by H.C. Whitney and his brother-in-law, Moses Cooley. The shop was located on the north side of town near the current site of the Burlington Mall. In 1865, John Sibley started a gunsmithing business on University Avenue in town. He continued to operate this business until 1886 when it burned down. In that year, Burlington began acquiring its own guns from other cities and towns in order to provide local merchants with firearms for their businesses. By 1892, Burlington had five businesses specializing inguns: A & W Gun Company (a grocery store), D & L Gun Shop (a hardware store), J H Weitzel's Pistolerovers (a pawnshop), and Fidelity Armory (an armory).
