Burlington is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the eastern border of Racine County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 54,898. The Burlington metropolitan area has a population of over 100,000 people and covers all or part of eight counties in northeast Wisconsin. Burlington was founded as a small town by German immigrants in 1854. It became an important agricultural and manufacturing center during the late 19th century, with TEXTILE INDUSTRY becoming increasingly dominant after new transportation methods were developed there such as railways and trucks. In recent decades Burlington has experienced growth in services and professional services, with many new businesses opening up around downtown since it annexed neighboring communities in 2000. The city is also home to two universities: University ofWisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and Beloit College (BC). The first European settlers arrived in what is now Burlington on October 10, 1854 when three families from Germany set out from their farmstead at Wausau for what would become Racine County. Today’s downtown district was built primarily during the late 19th century as Germans began to immigrate to this area; many storefronts still remain from that time period including some that date back to before World War II when American forces burned down much of the village following an altercation between local farmers and soldiers stationed nearby while they were deployed on maneuvers near Chicopee Falls. After years of development pressure from residents along with increasing economic opportunities elsewhere within Wisconsin finally forced Lyons Township trustees to annex Burlington on December 1st, 1900 – one week after Milwaukee had annexed its southern portion making it an official municipality within its boundaries . At this time most likely only a few hundred citizens resided inside the newly incorporated city limits but soon Burritt & Company mercantile store opened its doorsOperation continued unchanged until 1940 when Burritt merged with Wacoal Stores Incorporated forming Wacoal-Burritt Corporation which remains today one of largest retail interests in town today overseeing more than $225 million in sales annually
