The Brown Deer Area is located in the town of Chilton, Wisconsin and covers an area of about twenty-six square miles. The area was first settled by settlers in 1854, when the United States government bought two thousand acres from the kin of the late Captain John Folsom. The early residents were farmers who grew corn, potatoes, oats, and other vegetables; raised game animals; and mined coal and limestone near present day Chilton. Today, many businesses operate in the community including a bank, a grocery store, a lumberyard, and several small restaurants. As with most communities in this part of the country during this time period there were no schools within walking distance for either children or adults. A few families scattered around farmsteads or built their own schoolhouses which served as both homeschooling classrooms for their children and also social gatherings for citizens of Chilton. In 1860 when Chilton became a town it erected its first school building which still stands today along with several other buildings used as municipal offices or stores throughout its history. Though not always easy to do so due to technological advancements at that time (such as automobiles), some interesting aspects of local history can be found through researching census records from various years between 1840-1920 which list individuals who lived within one mile of where Chilton now stands. This allows us to gain insights into what life was like back then as well as how people interacted with each other on a daily basis. Additionally, oral histories can be purchased from those who experienced what was happening in our community during those times - often providing more detailed accounts than written information can provide alone!
