In 1879, Brown Deer built the first scopes in the area. The townspeople soon became interested in cricket and microscopy as hobbies, so they decided to build a school to teach these skills. In 1885, the first microscope was built in Brown Deer. The townspeople quickly started building other types of scopes, and by 1907, there were over thirty different types of scopes in use in Brown Deer. The early settlers of Brown Deer were interested in many things including astronomy, fishing, hunting, and agriculture. They also started building telescopes for their own use to see things up close that they couldn't see with their eyes. Some of the early telescope builders include George Argyle who built a telescope at his home in 1881, Isaac Newton who built a telescope at his home from 1887-1896, and James Fenton who built a Telescope at his house from 1897-1902. From 1907 until 1941 when it was destroyed by fire, the Green Bay Astronomical Society had an observatory on North Prairie Avenue which was used for research into space science and photography. Brown Deer, Wisconsin is a small town in the southern portion of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee-Waukesha Metropolitan Area. The first settler in what is now Brown Deer was John Graves who arrived in 1841. The town was organized as a village on December 8, 1846 by order of the Wisconsin Territory Legislature. On July 1, 1861, it became a city and only lasted until 1870 when it merged with Waukesha to form Milwaukee. Brown Deer’s history can be traced back to 1836 when Isaac Trees set up a logging camp near present day Brown Deer Lake. From here he began harvesting logs for sale and soon had enough lumber to build two stores and four houses. In 1840 he married Nancy Bagley and they started a family that would live in Brown Deer for many years. The first post office in Brown Deer was established on November 15, 1846 by John Prentice from Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin under the name West Allis Post Office. The post office changed its name to Green Bay on January 13th of 1850 due to high mail rates resulting from overloading during the Dakota War of 1849-1853 which took place north of the border between Minnesota and Dakota Territory (now North Dakota). When Green Bay became an incorporated community on October 16th 1860 it adopted its current name: Brown Deer after Nathaniel Harned who donated land for this purpose along with $5000 cash prize awarded to anyone who could show evidence that he had been driven out of his farm by Indians during their occupation of Prairie du Chien (present day Sioux City) in late August 1830/early September 1830…. brown deer means “a clean spot” or “a place where berries are found” according to one source…..In honor of Mr Harned’s donation we have put green berry bushes around all our Streets

In 1853, the government appointed a committee to make recommendations about how best to organize education in Brown Deer. The committee's report recommended that the school be operated as a public school. This made Brown Deer one of the first towns in Wisconsin to have public schools! Brown Deer has been around for many years and has experienced many changes! It has seen growth in both its population and economy! Today, it is an important community with a rich history!
Brown Deer, Wisconsin was first settled by the Potawatomi in 1786. The town was named for Brown Deer Creek which flowed through the town. The first post office in Brown Deer was established on April 14, 1854. In 1881, the town became a village and was renamed Apple Valley. On February 24, 1916, the village merged with the Town of Menomonee Falls to form the present-day city of Milwaukee.
