Brown Deer is named after Chief White Earth who resided there before white settlement began in what is now Wisconsin. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1836 when Stephen Houlihan and John Cushing traveled across what is now Minnesota Territory to find land for their family. They were not successful and returning home tired decided to establish a new home on the west side of the Laurentian River which would eventually become Milwaukee County. In 1839, General David Dixon established Fort Dearborn as an outpost on the east bank of the river opposite what would later become Milwaukee. On July 1, 1840, Wisconsin was admitted into the Union as a state with its own government and Post Office Department under Governor John Chautauqua! In 1846, Congress passed an act creating Racine County from part of DoorCounty and portions of Winnebago County including present day Brown Deer! The post office at Racine was founded on November 5th that year! Captain James Kappe served as first postmaster from 1850-1853; headed up by then-Governor Daniel Webster! Brown Deer’s early growth can be credited to its location within easy reach of both Milwaukee and Chicago – two major economic hubs at that time! This proximity also helped lead to businesses clustering around downtown streetscapes that remain today: State Street/Sheraton Avenue between Third Street/Washington Avenue N., Old North Bridge/Wabash Avenue NE., Water Tower Place between Michigan Avenue NW and Superior Boulevard NW., First National Bank Building at Western Ave./Milwaukee Ave., Wabash Brewery at Superior Boulevard NE./Water Tower Place until it closed in 1950; City Hall Annex building on Fourth St./Wisconsin Ave.; Butler Park off State St.; Mrs L’Heureux Nursery School between Seventh/Eighth Streets NW; Emerson Elementary School northwest corner Eighth Street NW; Crystal Bowl Recreation Area southwest corner Ninth Street NW; American Legion Post #212 on Madison Sq.; Gold Rush Museum off Niles Rd.; Masonic Temple building at Niles Rd.; Dodge dealership along Wabash Rte.
The town of Brown Deer was founded by the Potawatomi people in 1836. The town was named for Captain John Brownsfield, who helped lead a military expedition against the Chippewa Indians in 1834. The first store in Brown Deer was built on what is now Main Street. The town quickly became a popular stop on stagecoach routes between Milwaukee and Chicago. In 1850, the first post office was established in Brown Deer. In 1857, the first railroad arrived in Brown Deer, making it an important transportation center. By 1870, the population ofBrown Deer had reached 1,500 people.In 1898, Brown Deer began to become known as the "birthplace of Wisconsin's Liberal Party." In 1907, brown deer incorporated as a city and its mayor became the first person from any municipality in Wisconsin to be elected as mayor without serving for one term.
