The Brown Deer, Wisconsin community has been established for over a century. The community is located in the far southeastern corner of Milwaukee County, and its boundaries are somewhat fuzzy. According to tradition, the first white settlers in the area arrived in 1838. They were led by John Jacob Astor, who bought land near what is now Brown Deer from the Ojibwe people. Brown Deer was founded on March 26, 1881 when Oneida County officials approved a plat for the town. The plat included a square depot and three blocks of land that would eventually be home to the town’s library and post office. In 1905, Mayor James Sutter named it after General George Armstrong Custer during his military service in Mexico City. The population of Brown Deer grew rapidly during World War II as many residents enlisted in the military or served as auxiliaries. Some local businesses such as bakery and grocery store sustained heavy wartime production while others were destroyed due to bombings or damage caused by warplanes overhead. After the war ended, unemployment increased and some people decided to move away from rural communities into larger cities. However, many small-town residents chose to stay where they were because they believed that their values still held true – close family relationships, fishing and hunting opportunities, locally produced food, and an emphasis on history and culture. Brown Deer, Wisconsin was first settled by the Sauk and Narragansett Indians in the early 18th century. The area now includes parts of Brown Deer, Green Bay, and Waukesha counties. The first white settlers arrived in the mid-18th century and started trading with the Indians. By 1854, there were about 100 people living in Brown Deer. A post office was established at Brown Deer in 1855, and a store and school were built soon afterward. In 1865, Badger County was formed from part of Milwaukee County. The town of Brown Deer was platted on December 12, 1865, as a result of land acquisition by the county commissioners. The first postmaster was James Hickey. During World War II, Brown Deer became an important military base because it housed most of the available munitions for the war effort in Wisconsin. Because of its strategic location near major population centers across America, it also became one of the largest American cities to support military operations during World War II. The city experienced some difficulties during wartime due to shortages of goods and services that came as a result of wartime production limitations such as lack of rubber or aluminum for airplane construction (due to Japan's bombing campaign). However, overall community relations remained good following World War II thanks to initiatives like Operation Mop-Up (1946), which brought food relief into areas hardest hit by war shortages;Operation PLUMBING (1947), which helped refurbish many public buildings;andOperation GOODBYE (1948), which marked the end of an era in which City Hall functioned as an armory housing supplies for troops fighting in Europe.
