Brown Deer, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. The community takes its name from the Brown Deer animals that were common in the area during early settlers' days. The first white person to settle in Brown Deer was Abraham Hickey in 1847. He built a log cabin on what is now State Highway 8 and named it "Hickey's Camp". A post office called Brown Deer was established in 1849, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1863, General George Armstrong Custer discovered gold near Brown Deer and decided to establish a camp there for miners. As word spread about the find, other settlers began arriving and soon there were several settlements of around 100 people located around what is now State Highway 8. The first businesses opened up in this new community and by 1870 most of the men had left for different mines or fields outside of town. During World War II many American soldiers stationed here fought against Nazi Germany. One such soldier, Ray Neely (1915-1999), became one of America's most celebrated war heroes when he led an armored unit nicknamed "The Iron Curtain" into Berlin to liberate prisoners from concentration camps during Operation Overlord on September 20th 1944 - more than 400 miles away from his home base at Fort Snelling – becoming only the second American military officer ever to do so after John F Kennedy on July 22nd 1963.[1] In 1951 Brown Deer residents voted unanimously to become part of Douglas County as per terms set out by then county commissioners George Ditteker (D) and Loretta Weinreb (R). Today brown deer anchors one end of an expansive agricultural belt stretching along both sides of the Milwaukee River which bisected by Douglas County back then included all but two blocks east of US Highway 90 / state highway 8 running through today’s downtown area including much of present day Greenfield Twp., just south side of town off I-94/US HWY 83
Brown Deer, Wisconsin was founded in 1836 by the Potawatomi tribe. The area that is now Brown Deer was first inhabited by the Menominee tribe. The town of Brown Deer was established in 1856, and it became a city in 1907.
