Brown Deer is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 3,723 at the 2010 census, down from 4,089 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Brown Deer was founded in 1836 by Clements and Butler as a station on the Great Western Railroad. The present town was platted in 1854 by John Prentice and James Wetherall. The first settler in Brown Deer was George Pease who arrived in 1836 from Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania. He erected a cabin on what is now First Street near Green Bay Road. George's three children - Horace Pease, Levi Pease and Maria (Maggie) Pease - also settled here and took up farming after leaving home to start anew. From then until 1870, when railroads were built through this area making it easier for settlers to move goods and people, there were no villages or towns established within what are now Brown Deer Township, Racine County or Milwaukee County; only hamlets scattered along railroad tracks with few residents living more than a mile from them! The agricultural industry became very important during these early years due to its easy access to markets throughout central Wisconsin as well as transportation links to Minnesota and Illinois via Lake Michigan; thus goods could be transported quickly across STATE lines without having to worry about customs or tariffs! However, starting around 1880 things began to change as advancements were made in agriculture which led to increased competition among farmers and an increase in prices for goods sold outside of small towns! As this happened larger landowners ceded their land holdings which opened up new areas for farming but also caused some communities such as Brownsville (now West Allis), Wis.,to lose contact with their rural roots while others like Chinook (now Appleton) grew increasingly large while barely touching the surface of county government! In 1893 Brown Deer Township changed its name from Racine County Borough (later village) to that of Township of Brown Deer following ratification by its voters! In 1948 both Racine County Borough (later village) and Township of Brown Deer were consolidated into one entity under renamed Racine County; however many aspects – including municipal services – continued unchanged until 1968 when all local governments within Racine/Brown deer township lost their powers AND responsibilities!! This left much unfinished business including annexation & incorporation into other municipalities thru special Acts passed by our Legislature !! Notwithstanding all these challenges (& setbacks), over the last 50+ years community spirit has always kept us going despite difficult times- THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT WE HAVE SUFFERED IN THE MANY YEARS since consolidation!!!
The Brown Deer area was first settled in the late 18th century by families of English settlers. The name "Brown Deer" is derived from the Creeks that lived in the area at that time. The first white settler in the area, John Brown, arrived in 1784 and built a cabin on a hilltop near present-day Brown Deer. In 1827, James K. Polk purchased land along with his brother John and started Homestead No. 6 west of present-day town of Brown Deer. By 1870, there were over seventy brown deer farms dotting the landscape around Brown Deer and many more were added throughout the years.
